Chapter 2
The heavy ballroom doors swung open, and they walked in. Not just Sarah, but the man from the stage, Andrew Sterling. He had his hand on the small of her back, a gesture of casual ownership. They moved through the backstage area like they owned it, their expensive shoes clicking on the polished floor.
My manager, who had been yelling at me moments before, was now bowing and scraping. "Mr. Sterling, Dr. Miller, I am so sorry for the disturbance. We've taken care of it."
Sterling barely glanced at him. His eyes, cold and calculating, found me. I was still standing there, shoved against a wall by the security guards.
Sarah saw me. Her face was pale under the harsh fluorescent lights.
I pushed myself off the wall, ignoring the guards. I walked towards her, my steps heavy.
"Your head," I said, my voice dripping with a sarcasm I didn't know I possessed. "The severe injury. It seems to have healed remarkably well."
I saw her flinch. A tiny, almost imperceptible movement, but I saw it. "Mark, this isn't the time or place."
"Oh, really?" I laughed, a bitter, hollow sound. "When is the right time, Sarah? Or should I say, Dr. Miller?"
Sterling stepped forward, placing himself between us. "I think you've caused enough trouble for one night. You should leave."
"This is between me and my wife," I snarled, looking past him at Sarah.
"She's not just your wife," Sterling said smoothly, a smug smile playing on his lips. "She's the future of Sterling Medical Group. We've invested millions in her research. She is our chief expert."
His words hit me harder than any physical blow. Our chief expert. We've invested. It was all becoming clear. The whispers in the crowd, Sterling's presence, Sarah's miraculous recovery.
"The coma, Sarah," I said, my voice breaking. "Was it all a lie? The hospital, the doctors, the bills I've been killing myself to pay? Was all of it fake?"
She looked away, unable to meet my eyes. Her silence was my answer.
The manager scurried over again. "Mr. Sterling, the press is waiting for Dr. Miller. Her interview with the Medical Tribune is scheduled in five minutes."
Sterling nodded, dismissing the man. He turned his attention back to me, his tone condescending. "You heard him. Dr. Miller is a very important person. She doesn't have time for... this." He gestured vaguely at me, at my cheap clothes, at my entire pathetic existence.
I felt like I was suffocating. The air in the room was thick with their success and my failure. This woman, who I thought was lying helpless in a hospital bed, was a celebrated neurosurgeon. The wife I thought I was providing for was part of a multi-million dollar enterprise.
Our marriage, my sacrifices, my pain... it was all a charade. A long, cruel joke, and I was the punchline. My heart felt like it was being squeezed in a vise. The nine years we spent together, the love I thought we shared, it was all built on a foundation of lies. It was all fake.
