I suddenly remembered my final moments in my past life.

I had crawled to Caleb’s feet, covered in blood, clutching his trousers.

I begged him to spare me.

“I called the police to save you! Her death had nothing to do with me!” I had screamed.

Caleb had looked down at me like I was a disgusting insect.

His voice was thick with loathing.

“If it wasn't for you, she never would have been arrested.”

“She wouldn't have crossed the wrong people in prison and been killed like a dog in the street!”

He had kicked my hand away and delivered a brutal blow to my stomach.

“Valerie Vance, you are the reason she’s dead!”

The memory of the pain made me wince, and I finally understood.

Skylar had remained defiant in prison, offending a local gang leader.

She was targeted and killed the moment she stepped out of those gates.

Caleb believed that if I had stayed out of it, none of that would have happened.

Skylar would be alive, and he wouldn't have spent his life in mourning.

In his eyes, I was the villain.

Now, I didn't look back as I walked away.

“Then I hope you two deserve each other until the very end,” I muttered.

None of this had anything to do with me anymore.

I walked away with long strides, leaving them behind.

Behind me, I could hear Skylar’s surprised hum as she arched an eyebrow.
