Chapter 2
Maya stepped out into the bright morning sunlight, blinking against its intensity as she emerged from Morgan Tower. The rush of people, the honking horns, the scent of roasted chestnuts from a nearby vendor-New York felt almost surreal after the quiet intensity of Ryan Carter's office.
Her heels clicked across the sidewalk as she headed toward the subway, each step echoing the mix of adrenaline and exhaustion swirling in her chest. She replayed every second of the meeting in her mind, dissecting his questions, his reactions, the way his eyes had softened-just for an instant-when she'd spoken about wonder and memories. It wasn't much to go on, but it was something.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket, jolting her out of her thoughts. She glanced at the screen. It was a text from Talia.
Talia: How did it go??? Details or I'll die!
She almost laughed. Her fingers flew across the screen.
Maya: Met with Ryan Carter himself. Yes, that Ryan Carter. Think it went okay?? Hard to read him.
Talia: Wait. THE Ryan Carter? The billionaire hermit prince of Manhattan??
Maya: That's...one way to put it.
Talia: OMG. Tell me everything. Lunch today. 1pm. Pier 42.
Maya pocketed her phone, the flutter of nerves giving way to a small spark of excitement. Even if she hadn't sealed the deal yet, this was the closest she'd ever been to breaking through the wall that had kept her in small-time gigs for years.
---
Ryan stood at his office window long after Maya had left. Her words-"I think the world needs more wonder"-kept echoing in his mind. He hadn't expected to be moved by a pitch about table settings and lighting. Yet here he was, staring down at the city with a restless energy he hadn't felt in years.
He poured himself a cup of black coffee, the bitter scent grounding him. He could almost hear his sister's voice in his head: Let someone in for once, Ryan. Stop hiding behind your work.
A knock came at the door.
Cassidy stepped in. "What do you think?" she asked.
He turned, hiding the turmoil he felt. "She's talented."
"She's more than that," Cassidy insisted. "She's different. You saw it, didn't you?"
His jaw tightened. Cassidy always saw more than he wanted her to. "We'll see," he said shortly.
She shook her head with a sad smile. "You don't have to be alone forever, you know."
He set his coffee cup down with a soft clink. "This is about the gala. Nothing else."
Cassidy looked like she wanted to argue, but she only nodded. "I'll let her know."
---
The café at Pier 42 was quiet at lunchtime, perched over the East River with wide windows that looked out at the choppy water. Maya and Talia sat at a table by the glass, the city skyline rising in the distance like a dream. Sunlight sparkled off the waves, turning the moment into something out of a movie.
"So he's hot," Talia said, eyes wide as she stirred her iced tea. "Like, really hot?"
Maya rolled her eyes. "That's not the point."
"It's absolutely the point," Talia insisted. "You've been a hermit since Trevor. I thought I'd have to stage an intervention."
Maya winced at the name. Trevor Hayes. Her ex-fiancé. The man who'd taught her the taste of betrayal. She'd caught him cheating with a mutual friend a month before their wedding. It had nearly broken her-and had definitely broken her faith in love.
She stared at the river, the pain a dull ache she'd learned to live with. "This isn't about him. It's about my career. If I get this, I could finally move out of my shoebox apartment. I could hire an assistant. I could-"
"-actually sleep," Talia finished, squeezing her hand. "I know, M. And I'm proud of you. Just don't forget to live a little, too."
Maya tried to smile, but her thoughts kept returning to Ryan. His eyes, his voice, the way he'd listened so intently, as though he was trying to see straight through her.
She shivered. She couldn't afford distractions.
---
That evening, Maya spread her sketches across her tiny kitchen table, the warm yellow light of her lone lamp flickering. She traced her fingers over the images-snow-dusted archways, frosted crystal chandeliers, walls of silver branches and soft white roses. Her concept for the Morgan Gala was ambitious: an enchanted winter night in the heart of the city, a celebration of beauty and hope.
She barely noticed the time passing until her phone buzzed. It was a new email. Her heart leapt when she saw the sender: Cassidy Morgan.
---
Subject: Morgan Gala Proposal
Hi Maya,
Ryan and I were impressed with your presentation today. We'd like you to move forward with developing a detailed proposal. Let's aim for a final pitch early next week. Can you prepare a full design plan and budget breakdown?
Looking forward to seeing your ideas.
Best, Cassidy Morgan

Maya let out a soft gasp, hand flying to her mouth. She'd done it. She had a chance. Tears prickled in her eyes, but she blinked them back, determined.
She pulled out her notebook and started sketching furiously. She'd been waiting her whole life for an opportunity like this.
---
Across town, Ryan sat in his penthouse apartment. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed a breathtaking view of the city lights. His home was modern and immaculate, every surface gleaming, every object perfectly placed. It felt more like a luxury hotel suite than a home-because to Ryan, it wasn't. It was just a place to exist, to hide.
He poured himself a whiskey and settled into his leather armchair. The silence pressed in on him. He found his thoughts drifting back to the look on Maya's face when she talked about creating wonder. There was something in her eyes he hadn't seen in years-an innocence, a spark.
He took a sip, letting the burn chase away the chill in his chest.
He thought of his past-of the night his world had ended, of the car crash that had taken his parents. Of the way he'd thrown himself into work afterward, determined to build something that could never be taken away.
His phone buzzed on the table. A text from Cassidy.
Cassidy: She's perfect for this, Ryan. Don't push her away.
He stared at the message, thumb hovering over the screen. Then he set the phone down, unresolved.
---
The next day, Maya threw herself into work. She visited venues, compared fabric samples, and met with caterers specializing in delicate winter-themed desserts. She spent hours sourcing rare white peonies and silver-painted eucalyptus branches. Every detail mattered; every choice could be the difference between blending in and standing out.
By evening, she was back at her apartment, exhausted but exhilarated. She spread her research across her bed, measuring swatches of silk and velvet. She barely noticed when her phone rang.
She answered on the second ring, breathless. "Hello?"
"Maya? It's Cassidy."
Her pulse jumped. "Hi! Is everything okay?"
"Better than okay. Ryan wants to meet with you again- tomorrow, 11 a.m. He has questions about your preliminary ideas."
Maya swallowed hard. "Questions? Is that...good?"
Cassidy chuckled softly. "With Ryan, questions are always a good sign."
They hung up, and Maya's hands were still trembling as she put the phone down. She took a deep breath, then looked at her sketches.
This was happening.
---
Ryan paced his office the next morning, unable to shake the restlessness in his chest. The day was cold but sunny, beams of light streaming across his sleek desk. His assistant buzzed him.
"Ms. Evans is here."
He clenched his hands, then forced himself to relax. He wasn't sure why he felt so unsettled. It was just a meeting. A professional one. He repeated that to himself as the door opened.
Maya stepped in, radiant in a deep emerald coat that made her brown eyes glow. She looked confident, determined, beautiful.
He hated how his pulse reacted.
"Good morning, Ms. Evans," he said.
"Good morning, Mr. Carter." Her voice was steady, but he thought he caught a flicker of nerves.
He gestured to the table where her sketches were laid out. "Walk me through your vision."
She moved with quiet poise, pointing out each element. She described an entrance lined with frosted archways, a ballroom transformed into an enchanted forest of silver and white. She talked about live musicians playing soft winter melodies and waiters offering champagne in glasses rimmed with edible glitter.
As she spoke, he found himself captivated. Her passion was contagious, her ideas bold yet elegant. He could see it-the magic she was promising.
She finished, looking up at him with a hopeful smile. "That's what I'd like to create. A night of wonder."
Silence stretched between them. Then he surprised himself.
"I'd like you to move forward."
Her breath caught audibly. "You mean it?"
He nodded once. "Impress me."
Their eyes locked, an unspoken challenge hanging between them. Maya's cheeks flushed, but her chin lifted. "I will."
As she gathered her materials, he watched her, caught between a longing he'd buried for too long and a fear he couldn't shake.
---
Outside, Maya stepped into the brisk winter air, her heart soaring. She was in. She had a chance to make her dreams come true.
And as she glanced back up at Morgan Tower, sunlight catching on its gleaming windows, she wondered about the man who'd given her this chance- and why, even now, she couldn't stop thinking about him.
