Chapter 1
1 When the shipwreck happened, my husband and I both fell into the freezing water.
His body was completely submerged, but he used all his strength to push me above the surface.
Looking at his increasingly purple lips and pale face, I knew his life was fading fast.
I cried and said, "Let me go. I'll die with you."
My husband still held me up stubbornly. "Rory, hold on a little longer. Rescue is coming soon, and I need you to live."
I sobbed uncontrollably. "If you die, what's the point of me living alone!"
He said weakly, "Rory, rescue is almost here. After you're saved, please help me take care of Macy and her baby. That child is mine..."
I felt like I had been struck by lightning.
Macy was my best friend. Her husband was supposedly a researcher working for a top-secret government agency, so I had never met him.
All these years, I had been taking care of her and her unborn baby. I even dragged my husband along to help.
But I never in a million years expected that the father of Macy's child was actually my husband, Vance...
When I opened my eyes again, I had returned to half a month ago.
Macy was heavily pregnant. My husband and I were accompanying her for a prenatal checkup.
The nurse asked, "Who is the family member for Macy? Come here and sign."
Vance stood up immediately. "Coming."
At the time, I didn't think anything of it. Her husband was supposedly serving the country, and she was my best friend, so I felt obligated to take care of her.
But now, seeing my own husband proactively getting up to sign, I understood everything.
The nurse asked, "Are you Macy's husband?"
Vance didn't hesitate at all. "Yes."
"Sign here," the nurse said. "Congratulations on becoming a father. The baby is very healthy, so rest assured."
A joyful smile appeared on Vance's face. "Thank you."
Back then, I excitedly told Macy, "Did you hear that? The nurse said the baby is healthy. Congratulations! I bet your husband will go crazy with joy when he finds out!"
Macy secretly glanced at Vance and quickly looked away. But she was visibly a bit shy. "I guess he will."
I felt a bit regretful. "But your husband is always so elusive. You wouldn't even know where to find him to share this good news."
Macy spoke vaguely. "He... will know."
I was suspicious. "Didn't you say it's a classified agency? They aren't allowed to contact family privately. How will you tell him?"
Macy smiled and blinked at me. "You don't understand. We have telepathy."
As the past scene replayed, I finally understood it all.
Of course the baby's father would know. Because he was my husband, Vance.
Vance finished signing and walked over to explain. "Rory, Macy's family situation is unique. It's hard to explain too much to the nurse. So I volunteered to be her family member. Don't overthink it."
Before I could speak, Macy grabbed my arm. She leaned her entire body against my shoulder, appearing exceptionally intimate with me.
She lifted her chin somewhat arrogantly at Vance. "Does that even need to be said? Rory and I have been friends for over twenty years. She knew me way before she knew you. Let me tell you, if we both fell into the water at the same time, she would definitely save me first!"
Vance smiled very gently. "So, my appearance interrupted your sisterly love?"
"Absolutely!" Macy pretended to be angry, acting like a protective mother hen. She pointed at Vance and warned, "So I'm telling you, you'd better treat our Rory well, or I'll be the first to kick your ass!"
Vance made a gesture of surrender, but his lips held a smile. "Got it, drama queen. I'm really scared of you..."
Macy then called off her troops. "That's more like it."
She turned to me and said, "Rory, if he ever treats you badly, just let me know! As your bestie, I'll definitely help you teach him a lesson!"
Looking at these two faces in front of me, I realized how utterly stupid I was in my past life.
I actually thought Macy was truly protecting me, willing to go to war with my husband.
I also thought Vance only had me in his heart, which was why he didn't care about Macy's repeated provocations.
It turned out this was all just their flirting game.
I was just a prop in their twisted roleplay.
At this very moment, my heart was colder than the ocean water that day.
This was my most trusted lover, and my most cherished friend.
How absolutely ridiculous!
Perhaps noticing my pale expression, Vance held my hand. He frowned in distress. "Rory, why are your hands so cold?"
I pulled my hand back, my voice extremely cold. "I'm fine."
But Vance was relentless. He pulled my hand over again, using his two warm, dry palms to warm mine. "Are you really okay? You look terrible."
I glanced at Macy, suddenly feeling a bit mischievous.
I smiled and said, "Maybe I'm pregnant too. Should I go get a blood test as well?"
As soon as I said this, the large hands holding mine stiffened slightly.
As for Macy, she first looked astonished. Then she lowered her eyes, revealing a subtle hint of malice on her face.
