Chapter 2
Chapter 2
"Godmother never asks us for anything, but last year she suddenly asked us to buy some incontinence pads for her. Later, you and Godmother talked about how expensive city life is, and she told you not to buy them anymore. Do you remember that?"
Melanie pursed her lips and nodded at me, looking confused.
"Every time you went back, you always complained about the bad smell in the house. You said Grandpa couldn't take care of himself, but you never noticed how sad Godmother was."
"The diapers weren't just for Grandpa; they were for Godmother too. She gave all the diapers to Grandpa and used makeshift cotton pads for herself."
"Go back and take Godmother for a check-up. There are some things you need to know."
Godmother was a clean person. Melanie's words must have felt like a knife to her heart. Imagine how heartbroken Godmother must have been?
Melanie bit her lower lip, sitting on the bed with a heavy expression.
"You think too much. She can still work in the fields, so she must be fine. I've already scheduled my surgery. Stop trying to talk me out of it."
Her stubbornness wasn't something that could change overnight. Even if I told her I was reborn, she wouldn't believe me.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm my irritation. Suddenly, Melanie's phone rang. She pushed me aside and walked out with her phone.
It must be Amanda, the person I despised the most. All my resentment came from her habit of mocking Melanie since childhood. Now, Melanie had reconciled with her and secretly insulted me with her, which felt like a betrayal. If it weren't for the medical accident and seeing their chat records, I would never have believed she would stab me in the back. Even the closest sisters can turn against each other unexpectedly.
That night, I made a lavish dinner. Melanie was surprised when she came back. "This looks amazing! All my favorite dishes. I knew Emely was the best to me."
I motioned for her to sit and quietly served her rice. At dinner, we reminisced about harvesting rice together as kids. After going to college, we never picked up a sickle again, naively thinking we had outgrown such tasks. Even Godmother couldn't stand to see us working in the fields.
I put down my chopsticks and looked at Melanie.
"I know you hate me and wish I was dead. Can you tell me why that is?"
Melanie frowned instantly. I shook my head helplessly. There was no need to question anything after she harmed me.
"Forget it."
"Melanie, let me be childish for once. Let's call it quits."
"Soon, you won't have to see me anymore. But before that, can you come back to our hometown with me one last time, pick some gardenias, plant some rice, and take Godmother to the doctor?"
Her eyes turned cold, and she slammed her chopsticks down on the table.
"Yes, I've reconnected with Amanda. Do you have to be angry about it? We're adults now. Can't I have a secret? Am I supposed to be under your thumb forever? Even Mom always takes your side. Can't I find someone to rely on?"
"Why? I didn't harm you! Do you really have to end our friendship?"
I looked calmly into her agitated eyes.
"But you've already killed me once."
