Chapter 2
2
The maid was so frightened that she fell to her knees. Caleb rushed over when he heard the noise.
"Aria, what kind of tantrum are you throwing now?"
A sleepless night and the excitement of the engagement made Caleb look a bit tired.
He glared at me in the corner with extreme annoyance. Just as he was about to scold me, my body slid limply onto the floor.
"Aria!"
In that moment, Caleb forgot to be angry and started shouting in panic. "Brianna! Brianna, come quick! Something happened to Aria!"
Since I turned eighteen, this was the first time Caleb had called me by my name.
In my semi-conscious state, I forced my eyelids open for a second. I heard him, but I had no strength at all. I could only let myself drift into darkness.
"Aria."
Brianna hurried over, hiding the dark gleam in her eyes. She helped me up and headed straight for the hospital.
"Wait for me."
Caleb grabbed a random jacket and took me from Brianna's arms.
A burning heat radiated from my body. His eyes turned red with anxiety. "Why is she so hot? Aria has always had a weak immune system. Will she be okay? If I had known, I wouldn't have locked her in her room yesterday."
His voice was full of self-blame. Brianna twitched the corner of her mouth.
"Caleb, if you put it that way, it is my fault. It was my idea to have you lock her in her room. Please do not be sad. When she wakes up, I will apologize to her immediately. She will be fine."
With just a few words, Caleb felt like he had found his anchor. He unconsciously leaned closer to Brianna, drawing warmth and strength from her.
Because of this simple action, the short trip to the hospital became a living testament to their love.
After arriving at the hospital, I was wheeled into the examination room. Caleb was completely out of his mind with worry.
He paced back and forth in fear, slapping his hands together. "Aria won't have any serious issues, right? How am I supposed to explain this to Grandma?"
"It is all my fault. She is still just a child after all."
Brianna listened to his constant muttering and rolled her eyes in irritation.
But in front of Caleb, she tucked away all her temper and hugged him with concern. "Caleb, Aria is already twenty years old. She is not a child anymore."
"The doctor said it is just a bad cold. It is my fault. Next time, I will definitely take better care of her and make sure she doesn't stay up all night. Stop worrying."
She was subtly planting seeds of doubt. When Caleb calmed down and heard this, he immediately thought about how I had deliberately fallen on the floor.
So, was this all just a bitter trick to stop his engagement?
"Yes, you are right. Aria is too spoiled. To think she would sit on the floor all night just to ruin the engagement! Let's see how I teach her a lesson this time."
Caleb gritted his teeth. Brianna blinked her innocent eyes.
Beneath her long eyelashes, a fleeting look of calculation was perfectly concealed.
That afternoon, I finally woke up from my coma.
"Water... water..."
My throat was so hoarse that every single word felt like swallowing glass.
"Here."
Brianna gently pushed down a drowsy Caleb and handed me a cup of hot water.
Her attitude wasn't exactly warm, but she played the role of an elder perfectly. Caleb held her free hand with deep relief and rested his head against her wrist. "Thank god for you."
"Heh."
I let out a weak scoff and turned my head away. Only by looking away could I suppress the terrifying psychological pain.
"Where are your manners? Greet her properly."
Caleb was extremely displeased. No matter what, Brianna was now my future sister-in-law. Throwing an attitude the moment I woke up was unacceptable.
Not only did it disrespect Brianna, but it also put Caleb in a very awkward spot.
