Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Leo sat up straight. "Wren, I'm the oldest son. I have to support my brother. Since you won't help, we have to end this."
I was speechless. He acted like I was the one holding him back.
If he hadn't been so handsome, I would never have married into this poverty-stricken family.
Support his brother with my money? The nerve.
I couldn't help it. I burst out laughing.
"What's so funny, Wren?" Leo glared at me, disgusted by my lack of "ladylike" behavior.
"You should go into business, Leo. I have the perfect industry for you."
My words made no sense to him. He looked confused.
"You should be the world's leading supplier of thick skin. You're a natural."
"When they built the Great Wall, they should have used your face for the foundation. It's impenetrable."
I was calling him shameless to his face. If he didn't get it, that was his problem.
But Leo wasn't that stupid. He understood eventually.
"You! Let me tell you something, Wren! I will never forgive you for not helping Liam with his wedding!"
"You're not a good wife. What kind of woman works outside all the time and shows her face in public?"
"Have you no shame??"
I was stunned. I was wrong for working?
What law says women can't have careers?
The mother-in-law chimed in. "Exactly. Just sign the papers."
I smiled. These people were insane.
"And we want half of the inheritance your father left you!" Leo added.
Wait, what?
Their greed knew no bounds. Now they wanted my dead father's money?
They were relying on that stupid prenup we signed.
I looked at Leo with fake fury. "The prenup says our assets are shared, but you can't have that."
They were really trying to fleece me.
"Are you crazy? That's my dad's money. The agreement says our assets are shared, but that money is still in his estate's name. I have to withdraw it for it to be mine. You're dreaming."
Leo didn't realize I hadn't moved the money to my personal account yet.
He hesitated.
Liam leaned in and whispered to Leo, "Bro, Bella is in a rush. How much could her dad have left her anyway? Don't let a few bucks ruin the big plan."
My ears perked up. Bella? That must be the mistress.
And she's in a rush? Is she... pregnant?
Leo couldn't have a kid, though. I'd seen his medical report in my car. His "swimmers" were barely moving.
The parents seemed to agree with Liam.
"Wren's dad probably didn't leave her much anyway. It's not worth the wait. Just get the divorce done."
Leo weighed his options and made a decision. "Fine. We won't fight over your little inheritance. You've always been a big spender anyway. If you end up in debt, I don't want to be responsible. Sign it."
I yawned lazily.
"You've finished your math, but I haven't finished mine."
The Millers froze. They were terrified of me throwing a wrench in their plans.
I was definitely going to throw a wrench.
That's everything available right now.
