Chapter 1
The buzz of the phone on the coffee table was sharp in the quiet apartment. Ethan glanced at it, a small smile on his face, he thought it was Chloe, his fiancée, checking in from her bachelorette weekend. They were one month away from the wedding, and every little message felt like a countdown to the best day of his life. He picked up the phone, his smile fading when he saw the unknown number.
He opened the message. It was a photo. A woman' s hand, unmistakably Chloe' s with the silver ring he' d given her, was holding a positive pregnancy test. The background was a generic hotel bathroom. Below the picture, a single line of text burned into his screen.
"Congrats on being a dad. Or, stepdad, I guess. - Jake."
The air left his lungs. Jake. Chloe' s ex-boyfriend. The one she swore was out of her life forever. The one she said was a toxic memory. Ethan' s hands started to shake, the phone feeling heavy and cold. He stared at the picture, at the two pink lines that destroyed his world in a single moment. It couldn't be real, it had to be a cruel joke, a photoshop, anything but the truth.
He waited for two days, a storm of sickness and disbelief churning inside him. When Chloe finally walked through the door, tanned and laughing about her trip, he couldn't hold it in any longer. He stood in the living room they had decorated together, the wedding invitations stacked neatly on the corner table, and showed her the phone.
"What is this, Chloe?" His voice was a raw whisper.
Chloe' s smile vanished. She glanced at the screen, her expression unreadable for a moment before it hardened into something cold and unfamiliar. She didn' t deny it, she didn' t even look guilty. She let out a short, sharp laugh that held no humor.
"So he sent it to you," she said, tossing her purse onto a chair. "Dramatic, even for him."
"Is it his?" Ethan' s heart was pounding against his ribs, a frantic, painful rhythm.
"Of course it' s his," she said, her voice dripping with casual cruelty. "Did you really think I loved you, Ethan? Seriously?" She looked him up and down, a mocking smirk playing on her lips. "I only agreed to marry you to make him jealous. He said he was sick, that he was dying, and I felt sorry for him. But then he saw our wedding announcement, and suddenly he wanted me back."
The words hit him like physical blows. Each one was a precise, calculated strike designed to inflict maximum pain. He felt stupid, naive, a fool who had built his entire future on a foundation of lies.
"So what now?" he managed to ask, his voice cracking. "The wedding…"
"The wedding is still on, obviously," she said, as if it were the most logical thing in the world. "Unless you want to back out. But if you want to stay with me, you' ll be a father to this baby. You' ll be a good little 'dad' to Jake' s child." She spat the word 'dad' like it was an insult.
He looked at her, at the woman he thought he knew, the woman he had adored. He remembered a night a year ago, they were walking by the lake, and she had shivered in the cool breeze. He had taken off his jacket and wrapped it around her, and she had looked up at him with eyes that he thought were full of love. She had whispered, "You always take such good care of me, Ethan." He had held onto that memory, a small, perfect moment of warmth. Now, he saw it for what it was, just another part of the performance. He had been a prop. A tool.
A cold clarity washed over him, cutting through the pain. He saw everything with a brutal new perspective. Her constant need for expensive gifts, her disinterest in his work, her impatience when he was sick. It wasn' t just a one-sided relationship, it was a complete fabrication on her part. He wasn' t a partner, he was an accessory she was about to replace.
"No," he said, the word quiet but firm.
Her eyebrows shot up. "No?"
"No," he repeated, his voice gaining strength. "There will be no wedding. I won' t be a 'dad' to his child. I won' t be your husband." He walked over to the stack of pristine white invitations on the table, picked one up, and tore it cleanly in half. The sound was loud in the sudden silence of the room. He dropped the two pieces onto the floor between them. "I' m done, Chloe. I' m disappearing from your life. You and Jake can have each other."
