The next morning, there was a heart-shaped note on the dining table.

Every time she upset me, she used this method to soothe me, as if it could erase everything.

I opened the note and saw her elegant handwriting:

"I'll come home early tonight to celebrate our anniversary. Stop being angry, okay?"

There was even a little smiley face at the bottom.

I let out a cold laugh and tossed the note directly into the trash can.

My phone rang. It was my boss from the office.

"Caleb, the company is preparing a major project," he started.

"It requires staying overseas for a long period, and you were the first person I thought of."

"What do you think? Are you up for the challenge?"

I stayed silent for a few seconds, considering the opportunity.

"Caleb, this is a huge career move. Don't worry about the pay; we'll give you the best package."

"Of course, I know your wife isn't well and needs care..."

I interrupted him, my voice steady. "Sir, I accept the project."

The boss sounded relieved. "It's about time you showed your potential. It was a waste of talent keeping you here."

"Work hard. I believe in you!"

For years, I had stayed in a mediocre position just to take care of Elena.

If it weren't for my strong performance, I would have been let out long ago.

Now, I truly needed a job that kept me far away from her while letting me succeed.
