Chapter 3 The Man Behind The Fortune

Damian Sterling had built his company from almost nothing.

At thirty-five, he was the chairman of Sterling Global Holdings, a business empire with interests in real estate, technology and international investments. His name appeared in newspapers, business magazines and charity announcements. People admired his discipline and envied his wealth, but few knew how much he had sacrificed to reach the top.

His father had died when Damian was twenty-four, leaving behind debts and a struggling company. Damian had taken over, worked relentlessly and transformed the business into one of the most respected companies in the country.

He had learned early that trust was expensive.

Yet, somehow, he had never questioned the trust he placed in his wife.

---

The following morning, Damian arrived at his office earlier than usual. His assistant, Mr. Cole, was waiting with a tablet and a stack of documents.

"Good morning, sir. The board meeting has been moved to ten."

"Why?"

"Mr. Harrison requested more time to review the acquisition proposal."

Damian removed his jacket and placed it over his chair. "He has had the proposal for two weeks. Tell him the meeting stays at ten."

"Yes, sir."

"And what about the Westbridge project?"

"The revised figures are ready. I sent them to your email last night."

Damian nodded and opened the first file. For the next hour, he reviewed reports, questioned expenses and approved two major decisions. Work was familiar territory. Numbers did not hide their intentions, and business partners usually revealed themselves when money was involved.

People were less predictable.

His phone vibrated. A message from Vivienne appeared.

Vivienne: Don't forget dinner with the Hargroves tonight. I have already confirmed our attendance.

Damian stared at the message for a moment before replying.

Damian: I remember.

He put the phone down. The dinner was important, but he was beginning to dread events where he and Vivienne had to pretend everything between them was perfect.

Their marriage had not always felt this distant. In the beginning, he had admired her confidence and charm. She understood the demands of his work and seemed comfortable in his world. But over the years, small disagreements had become long silences. She was increasingly protective of her private affairs, and every attempt to discuss them ended in an argument.

He had blamed the pressure of business and family life. Lately, however, he was no longer certain that was the whole explanation.

---

That afternoon, Damian returned home earlier than expected.

He found Vivienne in the sitting room, speaking on her phone. She ended the call quickly when she noticed him.

"You're home early," she said.

"The meeting finished ahead of schedule. Who were you speaking to?"

"An old friend."

"Which friend?"

Vivienne gave him a questioning look. "Does it matter?"

"Not particularly. I was only asking."

"Then it was nobody important."

She picked up a magazine, making it clear she did not wish to continue the conversation.

Damian loosened his tie. "Have you spoken to Sebastian about his university plans?"

"Of course. He knows what he wants."

"And what does he want?"

"To join the company eventually. He has always been interested in business."

Damian nodded. He wanted Sebastian to understand that inheriting a name did not automatically make someone capable of leading an empire. The boy would have to earn his place.

"I think he should spend time in different departments before making any decisions," Damian said. "He needs experience."

Vivienne's expression tightened. "He is still young. You don't have to turn everything into a business lesson."

"Preparing him for the future isn't punishment."

"Sometimes I think you care more about your company than your family."

Damian looked at her. "That isn't fair."

"Isn't it?"

Before he could answer, her phone rang again. She glanced at the screen and immediately stood.

"I need to take this."

She walked towards the hallway.

Damian watched her disappear. It was not the first time she had left a room to answer a call, but something about her sudden urgency unsettled him.

---

Later, Damian went to his study to collect a folder. As he passed the upstairs corridor, he noticed Rosalie arranging a vase of fresh flowers.

She stepped aside when she saw him.

"Good afternoon, sir."

"Good afternoon, Rosalie."

He paused. She looked calmer than she had the previous morning, but there was still a guardedness in her expression.

"How is your mother?" he asked.

Rosalie looked surprised. "She's fine, sir. Thank you for asking."

"Good. I hope she is receiving the care she needs."

"She is, sir. I appreciate the job."

Damian gave a small nod. He had not expected such a sincere answer.

"Carry on."

"Thank you, sir."

As he continued down the corridor, he noticed her hands were moving carefully, almost as if she was trying not to make a sound. He remembered the coffee she had spilled and how frightened she had seemed.

He wondered whether someone had spoken harshly to her.

He did not ask. He had no wish to make her uncomfortable, and there were more pressing matters waiting in his study.

---

That evening, Vivienne prepared for their dinner with the Hargroves. Damian was already dressed when she entered their bedroom.

"You're ready," she said, adjusting an earring.

"We should leave in fifteen minutes."

She walked to the dressing table and reached for her handbag. A small folded paper slipped from its side and landed near Damian's shoe.

He bent to pick it up.

Vivienne turned sharply. "Give me that."

Damian looked at her before unfolding it. It was a hotel receipt, dated two days earlier.

"Why were you at a hotel?"

Vivienne snatched the paper from his hand.

"It was a meeting."

"At a hotel?"

"Yes, Damian. People have meetings in hotels."

"Who were you meeting?"

Her eyes narrowed. "Why are you questioning me like this?"

"I'm asking a simple question."

"And I don't owe you an explanation for every minute of my day."

Damian stared at her. The answer was not convincing, and her reaction was even less so.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Vivienne forced a smile and picked up her handbag.

"We're going to be late. Can we please discuss this another time?"

Damian stepped aside, but his expression remained cold.

As they left the bedroom, one thought followed him.

Something was wrong with his marriage, and he could no longer pretend otherwise.

That's everything available right now.
