Chapter 2
Elara POV
The smell of damp earth and rust woke me up. I was lying on the freezing floor of the castle dungeon. Thick silver manacles, cold and unforgiving, were clasped tightly around my wrists and ankles. Kaelen had seen to it that I was restrained not as a pack member, but as an abomination. Silver, for our kind, was not merely a weakness; it was an active poison that unmade us, cauterizing our flesh, fouling our blood, and arresting the very magic that allowed us to heal. The metal seared into my skin, leaving angry red burns. But the pain in my flesh was nothing compared to the agony in my bones. High above, through a small iron-barred window, the full moon shone brightly into the dark cell. It was the night of my eighteenth birthday. The shift was coming. Without a mate to anchor me, to guide my body through the violent transfiguration, the process was not a becoming, but a breaking. A sickening crack echoed in the silent dungeon. My spine arched backward. My bones were breaking and reshaping themselves all at once. I screamed. The sound tore my throat, echoing off the wet stone walls. Beyond the iron-slatted door, I heard the guards laughing. "Listen to the Omega cry," one guard mocked. They thought I was just weak, dying from the pain of a normal shift. Another wave of agony hit me. My fingers twisted into claws. My jaw extended forward. But something was wrong. Normal werewolves resolved into wolves of brown, gray, or black. But the rejection had not simply broken my heart—it had unwound the ancient seal that had long suppressed my true nature. As my human skin tore away, a luminous, sacred white light did not explode, but rather bloomed from my body, soft at first, then cresting into an intensity that bleached the dungeon of all shadow. The pain suddenly vanished. It was supplanted by a vast, ancient power that surged through my veins like a river breaking its banks. I stood up. I was no longer a small, broken girl. I looked down at my paws. They were massive, bigger than any normal wolf. My fur was the stark, undiluted white of fresh-fallen snow in moonlight. I had awakened the White Wolf bloodline. It was a legendary bloodline, said to belong only to the direct descendants of the Moon Goddess herself. The sheer energy radiating from my form was anathema to the silver that bound me. With a simple flex of my powerful limbs, the thick silver links did not shatter, but warped and snapped with a series of sharp, metallic pings. The silver burned my fur, leaving dark marks, but I did not care. I felt unstoppable. I lowered my head and charged at the iron door of the dungeon. The metal bent and burst from its hinges like rotted timber. I ran. My paws hit the stone steps with incredible speed. I burst out of the castle's back gates and rushed straight into the foggy Black Forest. The cold night air filled my lungs. I felt wild, powerful, and completely free. Suddenly, a massive, booming voice echoed in my head. It came through the pack's mind-link, the mental communication network connecting every wolf in the pack. Find her! Bring the Omega back to me! It was Kaelen's Alpha Command. His voice was filled with a strange, desperate panic. Even from miles away, I knew he could smell my fading scent. He was feeling the empty hole where our bond used to be, the terrible backlash of his own rejection. But his command had no power over me anymore. The White Wolf answered to no Alpha. I rolled in a patch of wild mint and wet mud to completely mask my scent. I ran until my paws crossed the invisible border of the Blood Moon Pack's territory. Just as I paused, a sound tore through the dense fog of the forest. It was a howl, not of anger or challenge, but a raw, desolate cry of profound loss—the sound an Alpha makes when his own soul has been amputated. It came from the direction of the castle tower, a mournful echo of the agony he had authored for us both. I stopped by a fast-flowing river. The cold water washed the dirt from my fur. I slowly shifted back into my human form. The return shift was smooth and painless. I leaned over the water and looked at my reflection in the moonlight. My eyes were no longer dull brown. They were a glowing, terrifying silver. I touched the burn scars on my wrists from the silver chains. I made a silent promise to the moon above me. I would never again be anyone's Omega. I would become a power in my own right, and Kaelen would one day offer up his soul for what he had done. And somewhere in the distance, his desolate howl still echoed—the first, involuntary payment on a debt he did not yet understand he owed.
