Chapter 1

My daughter was rushed to the ER, bleeding heavily after a terrible car crash.

When I reached for the surgical consent form, the head nurse slammed the clipboard shut and pressed her hand firmly against it.

“Hospital policy requires an immediate next-of-kin signature,” she said coldly. “How do we know you’re actually her father?”

I froze in disbelief. “She’s my biological daughter. Why the hell do I need to prove that to you right now?”

“Birth certificates can be faked,” she sneered. “For all we know, you kidnapped her. Without proof, there’s no surgery.”

Watching her act so self-righteous while my child was dying inside made my blood boil.

“Are you telling me I need a paternity test before you’ll save my dying daughter?”

She rolled her eyes. “It’s policy. If you can’t prove she’s yours, I’m calling security and having you arrested for child trafficking.”

With that, she actually radioed the guards, yelling that I was a child kidnapper.

Call the cops?

I reached into my bag and pulled out my State Police badge and uniform.

Let’s see how fast you regret that.

The moment my pen touched the consent form, a hand clamped down on the paper.

“Hold on,” Brenda said.

“Before we proceed with the surgery, we need to verify your legal guardianship.”

I handed her my State ID.

Brenda clicked through the computer system, her brow furrowing into a deep frown.

“The last four digits of the phone number on file don’t match what you gave us.”

“I changed my phone number last year,” I explained. “But my Social Security number and ID match perfectly.”

Brett, a young resident standing nearby, quickly chimed in.

“Nurse Simmons, I double-checked his ID. Everything matches the records!”

Brenda glared at him, cutting him off with sharp hostility.

“Shut up! You’re just an intern. What do you know about protocol?”

She turned back to me, her voice dripping with irritation.

“Rules are rules. Every discrepancy must be investigated. If something goes wrong, Nursing takes the blame. Can you take responsibility for that?”

I swallowed my rage and kept my voice calm.

“My daughter was treated for pneumonia here three years ago. Pull up her historical charts. My name is listed as her father.”

Brett immediately printed out the archived records and handed them to Brenda.

“Nurse Simmons, three years ago, Luke Mercer was listed as her primary guardian, and the ID matches!”

I thought that would settle it.

“Very well,” Brenda said dismissively.

Without even glancing at the documents, she took the papers along with my driver’s license and shoved them into a file cabinet.

Click. She locked the drawer tight.

Brett stared at her in shock.

“Nurse Simmons, what are you doing?”

She slowly slipped the key into her pocket.

“Per hospital regulations, all disputed identity documents must be opened and verified in the presence of Hospital Security and the Chief Administrator.”

She looked at me with a mocking smirk.

“Unfortunately, they’ve both clocked out for the day. So you’ll just have to wait, Mr. Mercer.”

Whispers rippled through the crowded waiting room.

“What’s going on? Why won’t they let him sign?”

“I heard his identity doesn’t match. Maybe he’s not the real father.”

I stood there, feeling the warmth drain from my veins.

Ironically, that exact high-risk safety protocol was something I had helped design and implement with the State Legal Affairs division.

It was created to protect healthcare workers from malicious bad actors.

I never imagined someone would twist my own policy to block my daughter’s life-saving care.

Right then, the operating room doors swung open, and a frantic surgical nurse leaned out.

“Nurse Simmons! Dr. Lawson needs to know if the consent form is signed! The anesthesia window is closing. If we wait any longer, the patient will crash!”

Brenda didn’t even look back as she barked her reply.

“Tell Dr. Lawson the guardian’s identity is unverified and suspected of fraud! For patient safety, the surgery is suspended until the police arrive!”

She spun around and pointed an accusing finger straight at my face.

“He’s probably a fraud trying to scam our hospital! Don’t let him leave, everyone! I’ve already called the police!”

I took a deep breath, pulled out my phone, and hit record.

I aimed the camera squarely at her smug face.

“Nurse Brenda, is it?”

“I’m going to ask you one last time. Are you officially refusing to let me sign the surgical consent form for my daughter?”

Seeing the camera, Brenda scoffed like she was looking at a clown.

“Oh, really? Recording me to play the victim on social media? Go ahead, film all you want! It won’t work on me!”

Thinking I was just a desperate nuisance trying to gather evidence, she leaned in closer to the lens.

“Yes! I am refusing!” she enunciated clearly.

“Because I suspect you aren’t her father! I suspect you’re a child trafficker!”

“The police are on their way. You can explain yourself to them in handcuffs!”
