Chapter 3
Lucian POV
The enforcers dragged them out of the building, and a heavy silence reclaimed the room.
Ten minutes later, the Family's Chief Financial Officer rushed into my office. He was sweating, holding a tablet tightly against his chest as if it were a shield.
"Boss," the CFO said, his voice shaking. "Three million in liquid assets was siphoned from the Family's legitimate accounts three days ago. The funds have been routed to a private offshore account belonging to Julian."
I stopped writing and looked up. "How?"
"It was authorized by the Vice President. Elena used your authoritative seal during the forty-eight-hour window before her access was fully revoked. Her legacy VP credentials granted her independent transfer approval up to five million—a privilege you never rescinded. She knew exactly when the system would update and exploited the gap."
I leaned back in my chair, the leather groaning under the shift in weight. In this business, stealing from the Boss was not just a crime. It was an act of war.
I ordered my intelligence network to track the money, and within an hour, they found the paper trail. Elena had used the three million to buy a high-end art gallery named "Dawn" in the wealthiest district of the city. She had paid in full, in cash, and listed Julian as the sole legal owner to launder the stolen funds.
I stood up, grabbed my coat, and drove to the gallery.
The gallery was a large, open space with pristine white walls and massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Elena was standing in the center of the room, directing workers who were hanging expensive paintings. She saw me walk through the glass doors, crossed her arms, and smiled smugly, assuming I had come to apologize.
"Are you here to beg?" Elena asked loudly, making sure the workers heard her. "Even if you kneel right now, I have to see if Julian is in the mood to forgive you for your appalling behavior."
I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out the thick stack of bank statements, and threw them at her feet. The papers scattered across the floor. The cold of the polished concrete seeped through the thin soles of my shoes, a chill that climbed the bone of my leg.
"You embezzled Family funds," I said. The thud of the papers had not yet faded when I spoke, my voice striking the gallery's high glass dome and causing a suspended track light to tremble. "You put the syndicate's legitimate cash flow at risk of collapse."
Elena looked down at the papers, completely unfazed. She brushed a speck of dust from her designer jacket. "It is for Julian's dream," she said, rolling her eyes. "He needs a quiet place to express his art. You are so rich anyway, Lucian. What is three million to you? You used to bleed for me, remember? You used to give me everything."
"Embezzling from the Boss is a crime." I took a step closer, my shadow falling over her. "If I call the authorities, or if I let my Capos handle this, both you and Julian will be locked away in a concrete cell—or worse."
Elena let out a short, mocking laugh. She stepped into my space, completely certain that I was bluffing. "You would never hurt me," she said, her smile victorious. "You do not have the guts to ruin my life."
I stared into her eyes and saw the absolute entitlement there. I saw a woman who thought my love was an infinite resource she could exploit forever.
"Fine," I said softly. "I will not call the cops."
I turned around and walked out of the gallery.
I drove straight back to headquarters. Let her savor her victory, I thought as I navigated the city streets. By the time she realizes I am not protecting her, she will already be drowning in debt she can never escape.
I picked up my encrypted phone and called Celeste. "Bring your lawyers," I told her, my voice steady. "I am ready."
An hour later, Celeste sat across from me at the mahogany desk. Three syndicate lawyers stood silently behind her.
"I am transferring eighty percent of my legitimate front's equity to the Sinclair syndicate," I stated, sliding the contract across the desk. "But legally, I am retaining Elena's title as Vice President of this specific branch. The three-million-dollar debt will be anchored solely to her name and her corporate identity."
Celeste picked up the pen and signed her name with sharp, elegant strokes. "My financial enforcers will take full control of the company in three days," she confirmed, closing the folder with a definitive snap. She leaned back, her dark eyes studying my face. "Are you certain about this, Lucian? Once my enforcers step in, they will strip her to the bone. There is no mercy in Sinclair ledgers."
"I expect none," I replied, my face an unreadable mask. "She chose her path. Now she must walk it."
Celeste smiled, a cold, approving curve of her lips. "Good."
I nodded, looking at the bold signatures that legally bound our families. I picked up my phone and permanently deleted Elena's contacts. I pulled the burner SIM card out of the device, snapped it in half, and threw it in the trash. The crack of the plastic was a sharp, final sound in the quiet office.
I walked out of the building and boarded a private jet to leave the city.
On my new encrypted phone, I opened a mutual associates' group chat. Elena was already sending messages, mocking me. Lucian is so weak. I broke his favorite toy and he just apologized to Julian. He cannot live without me.
I read the words and felt in my chest for the familiar sting of them, but the place was a vacuum, where not even a spark could catch.
I opened a private chat with Celeste's financial enforcer. "Deduct the cost of the computer she damaged in my office from her remaining legitimate salary," I typed. "And add a line item for the antique she destroyed. I want every cruelty itemized."
Three days later, Elena returned to headquarters to demand more money.
She found the executive floor locked. Through the heavy glass doors, she saw that my office had been altered. The furniture was gone, replaced by austere, steel desks. Sitting in my former chair was one of the Sinclair enforcers, reviewing ledgers.
My number was disconnected, and her text messages bounced back with red error icons.
She stood in the empty hallway, listening to the Sinclair enforcers explain that the territory had been surrendered.
Her phone buzzed. A notification from the gallery's bank account. The mortgage payments were due—and she was the sole signatory on a three-million-dollar liability she had never read the fine print for.
She suddenly realized she was trapped in a massive, inescapable three-million-dollar debt to a ruthless syndicate—and the man who had once protected her was gone.
And the real nightmare, she would soon discover, had not even begun.
