Chapter 2
After she collected her winnings, Sienna finally hung up the phone.
"How much did you win?" I asked, my voice flat. "Am I getting a cut?"
She froze for a second, then her expression returned to normal. "When did you wake up?"
"Right around the time you said I'd definitely eat it."
Her face was a mask of cold indifference. There was no guilt, no remorse.
She even had the audacity to warn me not to make a scene, not to embarrass her.
"It was just a joke with my friends," she said.
I just laughed.
She looked at me, a flicker of confusion in her eyes. "What's so funny?"
I laughed for a full minute before I finally stopped. "Nothing. I just heard a funny joke."
My calm demeanor clearly annoyed her. "Are you saying what I said was a joke? What's that supposed to mean?"
I just nodded. "Sienna, what am I to you?"
My quiet, steady gaze seemed to unnerve her. She was used to my screaming, my crying, my begging.
"Mason, what kind of a question is that? You sound so pathetic."
"Don't be such a girl."
I just stared at her, and she started to squirm. "What? What are you looking at me like that for?"
Before I could answer, her phone rang. "Sienna, come on! Everyone's waiting for you at Noir!"
"Just leave Mason at the hospital. He'll be fine."
It was him.
A smile lit up her face. "I'll be right there," she said, and hung up.
"You're fine now, so I'm leaving."
"It's Kai's birthday. I've already spent enough time with you. Don't ruin my night."
I just grunted and started to look for a lawyer's number in my contacts.
When I looked up, she was still standing there. "Aren't you going to his party?" I asked.
She just gave me a long, calculating look. "Did the doctors mess with your brain or something?"
"You're acting so strange today."
I just sneered. "You've always said you and Kai are just friends. Why would I be upset about you going to a friend's birthday party?"
She gave me another strange look, and was about to say something, but then my phone lit up.
It was a reply from the lawyer.
She saw the "Okay" on the screen and frowned. "Why are you talking to a lawyer?"
"Just some company business," I said, my voice a casual drawl.
She just rolled her eyes. "You should just quit that dead-end job. Your ten-thousand-a-month salary doesn't even cover one of my handbags. Look at Kai. He's already making fifty thousand."
I just smiled. "So when is he going to pay me back the hundred thousand he borrowed?"
Her face immediately darkened. "Mason, what's that supposed to mean? His family was in trouble! Is that all you can think about?"
I said nothing.
It had been two years since he had "borrowed" that money. This was the first time I had ever mentioned it.
Seeing my silence, she took it as a sign of submission. A triumphant smirk played on her lips, and she left.
The moment she was gone, I texted the lawyer. "Besides the divorce, I also need to collect on a debt. I'll send you the evidence later."
After I sent the message, I just closed my eyes.
I had been a lovesick fool for six years. It was time to wake up.
From now on, I was living for myself.
