Chapter 1
Chapter 1 Three years after my mission failed, my physical body remained by my husband's side.
My soul had already been erased by the system. All that was left was an empty vessel, running on residual protocols to keep up my daily routines and memories.
That was why my husband never noticed a thing.
Every single day, he brought his first love around to flaunt their intimacy, desperate to see me break down in tears or rage.
That was until today, when his precious lover shoved my body straight into the path of an oncoming semi-truck.
Only then did my husband discover the terrifying truth.
My fatal wounds were healing all on their own.
...
After a sickening crash, my body rolled across the asphalt, battered and bleeding profusely.
The woman behind it all took a frantic step back, covering her face and screaming at the top of her lungs.
"Garrett, hurry! Nora threw herself in front of a truck! She is trying to end her life!"
Garrett Rowe was my husband of several years. And the woman crying hysterically beside him was his first love, Gemma Hollis.
Hearing her screams, Garrett rushed over with a scowl. But the moment he saw the pool of dark blood, he stepped back in sheer disgust.
"Nora, are you out of your mind? Pulling a pathetic stunt like this? Get your ass off the ground right now and stop embarrassing me!"
I lay completely motionless on the pavement. Garrett showed zero concern, kicking my side repeatedly with an impatient sneer.
"I am warning you, Nora. My patience has limits!"
He gave his final ultimatum, completely indifferent to whether I was actually dying.
The truck driver scrambled down from his cab on trembling legs, letting out a massive breath of relief when he heard Garrett's words.
He pointed an accusing finger at me and stammered.
"She lunged right into the street! It had nothing to do with me! You can't pin this on me!"
Seeing this reaction, Gemma let the corners of her lips curl into a faint, satisfied smirk.
"Garrett, it is all my fault," she whimpered, tears welling in her eyes. "I should have watched Nora more closely. Blame me if you must, but please don't let an innocent driver suffer."
She played the fragile victim so effortlessly that Garrett pulled her into a protective embrace, pulling out his phone.
He bought her story entirely and offered the driver a fat stack of cash to settle things quietly, completely forgetting that his own wife was the one bleeding out.
Once the driver sped off, Garrett walked back over to me, looking down like an emperor addressing a stray dog.
"I am going to count to three. If you don't get up, I will never speak to you again."
This was how he had conditioned me for years. Just like training a pet, he would count to three, and I would scramble to obey, desperate for his approval.
Yet minutes ticked by, and I remained motionless. Frustrated, Garrett spat on the ground and kicked me hard in the ribs.
Fresh blood instantly stained his designer leather shoes. My body rolled over, exposing a cracked skull and a gruesome gash across my forehead.
It had been a high-speed collision with a heavy freight truck. Any normal human would have died instantly from that kind of trauma.
Yet to Garrett, it was nothing more than a minor bump. He did not care about me. In fact, if I died right in front of him today, he would probably throw a party to celebrate.
Too bad for him, I had already died three years ago. The shell lying before him had no soul left to lose, making it impossible to die again.
Garrett crouched down, wiping his shoes with a wet wipe. Gemma clutched his sleeve tightly, her voice trembling.
"Garrett, maybe we should call an ambulance? She looks really bad."
Garrett let out a cold sneer.
"She is just an attention seeker. Hospital? If she loves lying in the dirt so much, she can rot here forever. Let's go."
He deliberately said those cruel words to provoke me, expecting me to jump up in fury.
What he failed to notice was that the deep, jagged wound on my forehead was slowly knitting itself back together.
This body was only a shell left behind by the system to maintain the mission's parameters. It held all my past memories and feelings, programmed to keep loving Garrett Rowe in my place.
My actual soul had been extinguished the moment the mission failed, reduced to a wandering ghost bound to his side.
The irony was rich. Three whole years had passed, and he never once realized that the woman beside him was merely a hollow husk.
