Chapter 2

2、

The next day, I walked straight into Elena's office with my resignation letter.

I pushed the door open and saw her locked in a heated kiss with Jax.

I didn't say a word. I just pulled out my phone and snapped a photo of the passionate scene.

The sound of the camera shutter startled them.

Elena panicked when she saw me standing there. She pushed Jax away with such force that he tumbled to the floor.

Jax scrambled up, a flash of hatred crossing his eyes.

"Mr. Thorne, don't get the wrong idea. Elena had some dust in her eye, and I was just blowing it out for her."

I put my phone away and let out a cold laugh.

"That's a new one. I didn't know you had to use your tongue to blow dust out of someone's eye."

Elena turned red with embarrassment and anger.

"What's with the attitude? Jax was just helping me."

"Only a person with a dirty mind sees everything as dirty."

"And why didn't you knock? Do you even want this job anymore?"

I raised an eyebrow, my tone casual.

"You actually hit the nail on the head. I don't want it anymore."

I slammed my resignation letter onto her desk.

Elena glanced at it and gave a mocking sneer.

"Oh, I see. You couldn't get the money yesterday, so you're trying a new tactic today."

"This playing-hard-to-get act doesn't work on me."

"Jax brought two new project proposals to your office this morning. If you secure them, I'll give you every penny of that bonus."

Even now, she was still trying to dangle a carrot in front of me.

She really thought I was just a loyal dog who would never leave.

I took a deep breath and looked her in the eye.

"You've always said how capable Jax is. Let him handle those projects."

"Also, I'm not playing games. I am officially resigning."

Elena noticed the seriousness in my voice, and her brow furrowed.

"Silas, you know I hate being threatened."

She opened her safe, pulled out twenty thousand dollars in cash, and tossed it onto my resignation letter.

"You want money? Fine! Here. But you better make sure those projects are ours."

Jax chimed in with a smirk.

"A twenty-thousand-dollar resignation letter. I have to admit, Mr. Thorne, your methods are top-tier."

I looked at the cash on the desk and scoffed.

Without another word, I unclipped my ID badge and threw it next to the money.

"I'm not just quitting the job, Elena. I'm divorcing you. You'll receive the papers soon."

I ignored her screaming and slammed the door behind me.
