Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Nia froze for a second, clearly annoyed that he was thinking about me at all. She looked down, her eyes brimming with fake tears.

"If you're that worried about Sera, you should go to her. I'll just get over the fact that she tried to kill me."

She pulled her hand away from his, playing the ultimate victim.

It was clear Nia wasn't done with me yet. The truth didn't matter anymore. Xavier wasn't an idiot; he probably knew deep down that I hadn't pushed her.

But it didn't matter. If Nia said I did it, then in his world, I did it. He didn't even bother to investigate.

It was ironic, considering his reputation as a world-class lawyer. Investigation was supposed to be his religion.

I guess I just wasn't worth the effort.

My chest throbbed with a phantom pain. I hated myself. Why did I still care about a man who had destroyed me?

"Don't worry. I'm going to make her get on her knees and beg for your forgiveness. She almost killed you. She owes you that much."

Xavier's cold voice cut through the air. As he looked up, his eyes seemed to lock onto mine for a split second.

My heart hammered. Could he see me?

I felt a surge of pathetic hope. For over a decade, my only dream was for Xavier to actually see me.

I tried to scream, reaching out to grab his wrist.

"It wasn't me, Xavier! I didn't do anything! Nia threw herself down when she saw you coming! Please, just believe me once!"

My hand passed straight through his arm. I caught nothing but cold air.

Xavier saw nothing. He looked away and pulled out his phone.

My hope died instantly. It was just a coincidence.

I watched him dial my number.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

No one picked up. Xavier's face darkened with every ring.

"Fine, Sera. You want to play games? Let's play."

He looked irritated, muttering insults under his breath as he typed out a series of messages. I drifted closer to read them. Every word was dripping with hatred.

"Sera, I don't care if you're throwing a tantrum or just trying to get my attention. Get your ass to the hospital within three days and apologize to Nia on your knees, or we're getting a divorce."

"You know what I'm capable of. I will make your life a living hell after the split. You committed a crime; you face the consequences. Don't think giving up a piece of your liver settles the debt. You owed her that!"

"Stop playing dead and get over here. My patience is gone!"

I stared at our chat history. He had me on mute. The screen was a long, one-sided stream of messages from me to him.

He hadn't even listened to my voice notes. Those little red dots sat there like mocking eyes.

This was probably the most he had ever messaged me at once. And every single word was a threat.

That's everything available right now.
