Chapter 3

3.

Toby’s words were like a dagger driven straight into my heart.

My son usually kept a solemn, cold face around me, but right now, he acted like an excited little boy.

He was celebrating getting what he always wanted.

Tessa bit her lower lip, modestly looking down.

Then she fell to her knees with a loud thud, bowing before me.

“My lady, please don’t be angry. Garrett and I truly love each other. I beg for your blessing.”

“I have given him a child now. You have such a kind heart, please give my husband back to me.”

Garrett immediately stepped in front of her, scowling at me. “Gwen, don’t take this too far! Tessa has never wronged you!”

I stared coldly at the husband who was defending a maid. My chest tightened until I could barely breathe.

“Go away! Stop bullying Mommy Tessa!”

A sudden, violent force shoved me from behind. I lost my balance and fell backward, the back of my head crashing against the hard stone pavement.

Warm blood poured out instantly, staining my trembling hands.

Toby looked startled for a split second, but he quickly puffed out his chest and mumbled defiantly.

“You fell because you’re clumsy! It has nothing to do with me!”

I gritted my teeth and forced myself to stand up through the blinding pain. By then, Tessa was already hiding in Garrett’s arms, trembling like a frightened bird.

Garrett shielded her behind him, looking at me as if I were a dangerous monster.

No wonder Tessa had put on her finest silk gown and expensive jewelry that morning.

She had stood by the entrance like an eager young girl awaiting her lover.

She had even taken care of the baby herself instead of leaving it to the wet nurse.

Her protector was finally back to give her power.

“When did the two of you start this disgusting affair behind my back?”
