Chapter 2

2 I drove to the restaurant by myself. As I parked, I saw two familiar figures walking toward me.

Mark spotted me first. His face twisted. "Are you following me? Are you serious? I can't even go to dinner with the team without you spying on me? Do you not trust me at all? It's like I'm being watched like a dog! It's no wonder people don't like being around you."

Sarah nodded right along with him. That's when I noticed the diamond necklace she was wearing. Same set as the ring.

I didn't answer Mark, just pointed at Sarah's necklace. "That's pretty. You've got good taste."

Cars were honking behind me. I got out of the way.

A man got out of his car, holding flowers, a birthday cake that said "Happy Birthday, Wife", and a gift.

I laughed silently, but felt a sharp pain in my chest.

My husband couldn't even remember my birthday.

I just wanted to get out of there.

"I'm not following you. I made a reservation here. I'm going inside."

Mark grabbed my arm, making me wince. "You made a reservation here behind my back? With who? I get you a ring and you give me the cold shoulder? Who are you all dressed up to see? Amy, are you cheating on me?"

I was stunned, looking at him.

He was standing right next to his not-so-subtle employee, accusing me of cheating.

I was just wearing a dress and some makeup, because I didn't want to look like a mess.

I just wanted to have a quiet birthday dinner.

"I told you last week I had a reservation here for tonight. It's my birthday. I guess you forgot."

Mark opened his mouth, and closed it.

He remembered a mention but had totally spaced.

"Why didn't you remind me? Since it's your birthday, join us! We can celebrate together!"

His invitation felt forced.

I just shook my head. "No, thanks. You guys have fun. I'd just be a buzzkill."

He visibly relaxed. "Okay, I'll order you a birthday cake and have it sent over."
