Chapter 3
3 For the next few days, I rarely saw Garrett.
I was relieved. I didn't have to guess his thoughts anymore. To secure my future, I started secretly transferring the money I'd accumulated over the years.
When Garrett returned, I was tired from watching TV and had fallen asleep on the couch.
The strong smell of alcohol woke me up.
I opened my eyes to find myself in Garrett's arms, and I met his bloodshot eyes.
For some reason, my hand slowly moved to his eyes.
"Been busy lately?"
"Yeah, something tricky came up. Once it's sorted, I'll have time for you."
I nodded obediently, suppressing my curiosity about what was going on.
"Go to sleep. I have some things to deal with."
Alone in bed, sleep evaded me.
Garrett's weary face was in my mind. I got out of bed, made him some honey water, and went to the study.
At the door, I hesitated.
Was this my place?
In those few minutes of hesitation, I overheard Garrett's phone conversation.
"I'll pay whatever it costs. Lily can't wait."
"I know, finding a suitable heart is incredibly difficult…"
So, he was busy finding a heart for Lily.
I turned, poured the honey water down the drain, and went back to bed without a word.
When I woke up, there were signs someone had been sleeping beside me, but the bed was cold, suggesting he'd been gone for a while.
That evening, Garrett returned, still reeking of alcohol, his eyes bloodshot.
"Was it a difficult problem?"
Garrett buried his face in my neck and mumbled, "Yeah."
I sighed and patted his back gently.
I messaged the person who had mocked me earlier and found out which hospital Lily was in.
It was a private hospital, with Garrett as the largest shareholder. He'd admitted Lily to his own hospital.
Seeing Lily, I was surprised. The illness had ravaged her, leaving her gaunt and skeletal, her large eyes bulging.
She was equally surprised to see me.
"You and me before, we're similar."
"Yeah, but now we aren't. I'm even more like you than you were."
Lily clearly hadn't expected that comment. She stared blankly for a moment before smiling faintly.
I shrugged. Bullying a sick person felt pointless.
"I just got a tissue match done with you."
Lily frowned. "A tissue match?"
"Yes. For a heart transplant."
Her frown deepened.
"If it's successful, I'll give you my heart."
That's everything available right now.
