Chapter 1

My wife's assistant left off three zeros on a multimillion-dollar contract, causing our firm catastrophic financial losses.

The partner factory went bankrupt overnight, and their devastated owner took his own life under the crushing pressure.

The moment the assistant shed a few crocodile tears, my wife pinned the entire disaster on me, claiming I had managed the project from the start.

The company dragged me to court, burying me under eight figures of crushing debt.

The deceased owner's family doxxed me online, inciting a vicious mob that wished for my gruesome death.

I was blacklisted across the entire industry, watching my hard-earned career turn to ashes in seconds.

When I confronted my wife, she merely admired her fresh manicure and dismissed me with a shrug.

"Miles is young and inexperienced," she said casually. "You've been in the corporate game for years. A hit like this won't really ruin you."

Remembering how I had just walked in on her passionately kissing that assistant in her office, I threw the divorce agreement in front of her.

"Sign it."

"Are you done yet? It's just taking the fall for a kid. Threatening me with a divorce is pathetic," Savannah sneered.

"The truth speaks for itself. You're a veteran in the corporate world, Devon. Don't tell me your skin is really this thin."

She tossed the divorce agreement onto the floor with disgust, acting as if I were the villain committing an unspeakable crime.

Before I could speak, her phone rang.

Miles's helpless, whiny voice came through the speaker.

"Savannah, what do I do? I messed up the project data again, and Mr. Dawson is furious. Am I going to get blacklisted like Devon?"

Savannah's harsh expression instantly softened into tender warmth.

"Don't worry, Miles. Just do what we did last time. Tell them Devon was in charge and you were just handling the handover."

"But Devon already took the heat for me once. If Mr. Dawson sues him again, he's going to despise me!"

Savannah shot me a look dripping with disdain.

"He's your manager. Taking the blame for you is his job! Besides, he has experience dealing with this stuff. Stop worrying."

I slammed my fist onto the mahogany desk, trembling with rage.

"Savannah, you know damn well how much sweat and blood goes into a single deal! Are you out of your mind, throwing the entire company away just to protect Miles's career?!"

Sniffling and muffled apologies echoed from the phone, causing Savannah's glare to turn ice-cold.

"Nobody is perfect at work! Miles is still young. You failed to mentor him properly, and now you have the nerve to throw a tantrum at me?!"

"I failed to mentor him?!"

What a bitter joke.

I spent over a decade clawing my way up through the cutthroat business world, swallowing blood and humiliation to reach the general manager position.

Yet my once-promising career was shattered in an instant, all for her pet assistant.

Ever since Miles joined the firm, any error in his reports was blamed on my lack of oversight.

Whenever he missed his sales targets, she claimed I didn't train him or share my personal network.

Meanwhile, every multimillion-dollar contract I secured by drinking myself sick at client dinners was handed to Miles on a silver platter.

Savannah couldn't wait to drain every drop of my worth just to pave his golden road.

"I already took the blame once and got sued for him," I snapped. "Don't even think about throwing me under the bus again!"

Savannah stared at me with dead eyes and hit the intercom button on her desk.

"Transfer Miles's current account under Devon Hayes's name immediately. Tell Mr. Dawson to seek damages from Devon. Since he's already facing lawsuits, the company has no reason to keep backing him."

She didn't care about my protests.

With a few cold words, she sealed my doom and shattered the last remnant of my love for her.

Seeing how pale I looked, she finally picked up the divorce papers, scribbled her signature, and threw them at my chest.

"There, I signed it. In a month, you'll be on your knees begging me to take you back."

"Now get the hell out and clean up this mess!"
