Chapter 2

2.

David went straight into Chloe's room. Because the house had great soundproofing, I couldn't hear anything from the hallway.

Back in my study, I texted the staffing agency to ask for the contact information of Chloe's previous employer.

Once connected, I inquired about her past performance.

"That girl might look young, but she is far from innocent."

"She tried to seduce my husband while I was out of town. It nearly ruined our marriage, which is why I fired her on the spot and kicked her out."

I immediately understood what Chloe was aiming for.

Still, I trusted David.

The next evening, I ran into Chloe as she brought in some packages. Glancing toward her room, I caught her holding up a piece of clothing against her body.

Staring into someone's bedroom felt rude, so I looked away.

That night, she put on a French maid costume and headed toward our master bedroom with a bowl of warm tonic.

I had just stepped out of the bathroom after removing my face mask when I saw her walking in.

"What are you bringing David?"

Hearing my voice from behind, Chloe froze and turned around self-consciously.

"I know Mr. Cole works very hard and deals with a lot of physical stress, so I made him some organic ginseng tonic."

Only when she turned around did I get a full look at her outfit.

The top barely covered her chest, and the skirt was so short it showed everything with the slightest movement.

"Fine, but do not wear such bizarre clothes around the house. Even though we know you well, that outfit does not seem appropriate."

I gave her a polite hint, but she played dumb.

"It is fine! It is just a little loose. Summer is hot, so wearing something airy feels much cooler."

My eye twitched. She clearly wore it on purpose.

Still, my husband was a quiet man who did not drink or smoke and always came straight home from work. I figured he would not dare look twice.

By the time I finished washing my face, Chloe had already walked out of our room.

I knew David would not fall for her games. No matter how hard she tried, it would be useless.

Just as David and I were getting ready for bed, the nanny knocked again.

She carried another bowl of herbal brew.

Curious, I asked, "What is that supposed to be?"

She smiled coyly. "A special vitality tonic. It is great for men's health."

David let out a dry laugh and shook his head. "You really think of everything."

He took the bowl from her hands and drank it down in one gulp.

"All right," I said firmly. "Do not make him these strange drinks anymore."

Chloe suddenly grew agitated.

"How can you say that? Mr. Cole works so hard every day. He needs all the nourishment he can get!"

David gave an awkward chuckle. "Listen to Bridget. No need to make these anymore. I am a grown man; I do not need extra supplements."

Only then did Chloe leave the room.

Yet the strange dynamic between them left a bitter taste in my mouth.
