Chapter 2
2 Then she ran to Liam, leaving me there, a free-fall victim.
And I did die.
My eyes tracked Sarah's retreating figure, the chaos around me C the shouts, the cries for help, all fading into a silent tableau.
Yes, I was a skydiver. But did Sarah forget that three years ago, when she decided to climb, the safety rope snapped, and I saved her, pulling her back from the brink?
Sarah had walked away unscathed, but I had pulverized both my arms. Doctors were amazed, even saying we’d both be dead if I didn’t have such sheer will.
And what had Sarah done? She rushed off to see Liam, receiving his phone call just minutes later.
Before leaving, she offered no hint of guilt, only a cold remark.
"Liam's drunk, and his stomach is acting up. He doesn't know anyone here, and I have to take care of him."
I swallowed my disappointment and the burning lump in my throat, begging her not to leave. I humbled myself, placing my pride and self-respect at her feet, desperately needing her to stay. I had no one in this city either.
Sarah had just stared at me, her eyes filled with cold annoyance.
"You're so needy, Ben. It's pathetic. I thought you were stronger than this. You're just being so dramatic."
I was speechless. I could only watch as she walked away.
It was always like this. When Liam was involved, it was always an emergency. With me, no matter the danger I faced, Sarah always thought I was being melodramatic.
"Just Let Him Learn"
"Look at him, the selfish jerk," I heard Sarah say, her voice sharp. "He only cares about himself, putting others at risk during a crisis. It'll do him good to be ignored for a while."
It felt like my heart was being ripped out of my chest, even as a ghost.
So that’s how she saw me. Selfish. Pitiful.
It didn’t matter now. I was already gone. Some people just weren't meant to be mine.
Hand in hand, they left the hospital, seeming like a perfect couple. My body was probably being ripped apart by animals, nothing recognizable remaining. I wouldn't even have a full body for a funeral.
