Chapter 3
3.
A mob of angry people swarmed my vehicle, screaming for blood.
Mila and Landon appeared almost instantly, pushing through the crowd.
After "learning" what happened, Mila was the first one to point a finger at me.
"Lincoln! How could you do something so horrible?"
"He was eighty years old! How could you be so cruel to a helpless senior citizen?"
Landon shook his head, looking at the body bag with fake grief.
"To let a simple argument turn into a tragedy… Lincoln, I'm disappointed in you."
Their words fueled the fire, and the old man's family started shrieking at me.
"My dad was healthy! He just went out to get medicine for his grandkid!"
"You're a monster! You killed him!"
"A life for a life! We want justice!"
The scene was a carbon copy of my previous life, but I didn't panic this time.
I looked at Mila and asked calmly, "Didn't you tell me you were having a life-threatening allergic reaction?"
Mila didn't show an ounce of concern for me; she just stood there looking righteous.
"I asked you to get medicine, not to murder someone!"
"Waiting five minutes wouldn't have killed me, but your temper killed this poor man!"
"The family is devastated, and you're still making excuses. It's pathetic!"
I felt a coldness in my chest as I looked at her.
I glanced at the red spots on her arms, which looked more suspicious by the second.
"Are your hives still itching?" I asked casually.
Mila flinched and quickly pulled her sleeves down to cover her skin.
Landon stepped in to block my view of her.
"Stop trying to change the subject, Lincoln! You killed a man!"
"You're going to prison for this!"
"Folks, even though Lincoln is my friend, he has to pay for what he did."
"I'm calling the police right now!"
Landon pulled out his phone, expecting me to beg for mercy.
In my last life, he used this moment to convince me to pay a massive settlement to avoid a scandal.
But once I paid, the family leaked a video of the "hush money" exchange.
The public took it as a confession of guilt.
The comments haunted me: "If you're innocent, why did you pay?"
"Money can't buy a life! Lock this rich trash up!"
People had surrounded my office and my home, throwing trash and painting slurs on my walls.
They wanted to push me to the edge again.
But I wasn't going to play their game this time.
I tucked my hands into my pockets and smiled.
"Go ahead. I support you calling the police."
That's everything available right now.
