Chapter 3

Everett took first place, obviously. The giant screens replayed the moment he won over and over. He looked into the camera with a mocking sneer.

“Caleb Sterling’s era is over. Caleb, you were never meant to beat me at anything.”

I watched him standing under the spotlights, surrounded by fans, while my heart turned to ice. And there was Sienna, clapping harder than anyone else, her eyes shining with pure joy.

On my phone, the countdown had only two days left. Sienna claimed she wanted to comfort me for my loss.

She said we would drive to the coast early the next morning. We would stay at a luxury hotel and celebrate my birthday.

“Don't be sad. Let’s go shopping and get you something nice, okay?”

“A silly competition doesn't prove anything. You’re still the best in my heart.”

“You don't need to enter so many contests anyway.”

She linked her arm through mine affectionately. I was so sick of this fake sentiment, but I had to play along. I smiled and nodded.

“Whatever you want, honey.”

Back in our room, I changed my clothes and got ready to head out. As I walked into the living room, I heard her on a frantic phone call.

“Wait for me! I’m coming right now!”

She spun around and saw me. For a second, she looked panicked, but she quickly masked it with a gentle expression.

“Caleb, something went wrong with a project at the office.”

“I have to go check on it, so I can’t go shopping with you. I’ve already booked the hotel by the beach.”

“Go there and wait for me. I promise I’ll be there tonight.”

I gave her an understanding smile. “It’s fine. Go take care of your work.”

She hugged me, seemingly moved. “Wait for me. I’ll definitely be there for your birthday.”

Then she rushed out the door. Watching her leave, the last bit of warmth I felt for her vanished.

I turned around and gathered my personal savings. I took every couple-themed item we owned and dumped them all into the trash.

These things used to represent our love, but now they were just a pathetic joke. Then I drove toward the ocean.
