Chapter 2

2

The next evening, Trenton shockingly came home early.

I had just finished getting ready and was heading for the front door.

Seeing me dressed up in a chic outfit, Trenton paused in the entryway, deliberately blocking my path.

He frowned, feigning casualness. "Where are you going dressed like that?"

"Out for drinks with Chloe," I answered honestly.

His frown deepened.

He started to reach out to stop me, but I pushed right past his arm.

In the past, I cut off almost all my friends just to revolve around his schedule, losing my entire identity in the process.

It was time to reclaim my life. How he felt about it was no longer my concern.

When I arrived at the lounge, Chloe waved enthusiastically and pulled me into a booth, eager to catch up.

An hour later, right in the middle of our cocktails, my phone lit up.

It was Trenton.

I didn't feel like answering, so I glanced at the screen and laid it face down on the marble table.

Chloe had always despised Trenton's treatment of me.

Watching my nonchalant reaction, she grinned with pure delight.

"Look who finally woke up! That obedient housewife act was never you anyway."

"Whatever you need for the next step, just say the word."

I had bailed on our friend group countless times for Trenton, leaving them frustrated and heartbroken for me.

Now that I had let him go, I intended to make up for all the lost time.

It was well past midnight when I got home.

I flipped on the lights and jumped in surprise―Trenton was sitting on the couch in the dark.

Once my pulse settled, I ignored him and walked straight toward the bedroom.

As I passed him, he grabbed my wrist tightly.

"Why didn't you pick up my calls?"

"Coming home this late... Do you even remember you're married?" he hissed in fury.

I yanked my hand free and said flatly, "I had a few drinks with a friend. Why are you making such a scene?"

With that, I walked into the bathroom to wash off the smell of alcohol.

After my shower, I slid under the covers.

Just as I began to relax, a pair of arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me against a warm chest.

Before he could go any further, I shoved his hands away.

"I'm exhausted. I'm going to sleep."

Trenton stiffened. His face darkened with rejection, and he finally climbed out of bed to sleep in the guest room.

Without him crowding me, I had the entire king-sized bed to myself and slept like a baby.

Over the next few days, Trenton came home early every single evening, insisting on having dinner with me.

On Saturday, Chloe invited me out for brunch again.

Before parting ways, I looked at her with total seriousness.

"Chloe, you mentioned your senior colleague is one of the top divorce lawyers in town. Can you give me her contact?"

"I want to hire her."

Chloe's eyes lit up with excitement, and she agreed on the spot.

When I got home, Trenton wasn't back yet. Suddenly, a notification popped up on my socials.

Hank, one of Trenton's best friends, was throwing a welcome-baby bash for his newborn son, and Vera had accompanied Trenton to the venue.

In the photo, Vera was leaning snugly against Trenton's shoulder.

The comments were full of people gushing over what a perfect match they were.
