Chapter 2 THE KING'S CHOOSE MATE
Kael Blackthorn was late, and he despised being late. The border report had run an hour over. Three Alphas had argued grazing rights while he counted the cracks in the council table, and ink still stained two of his fingers. His mother had caught him in the corridor and straightened his collar without a word, which was how Isolde said everything that mattered. Tradition required the king to witness the Moon's choices. Tradition also had a convenient way of matching politics. Lady Cassandra Wolfe's family had spent months making sure the right people knew her lineage. He expected the bond to confirm what the council had already decided. A clean match. A strong alliance. No surprises. He had not slept well in a week. The throne had been his for three years, and in that time he had learned that the court respected two things, certainty and fear, and that he could not afford to show it either of its opposites. Tonight he intended to give it certainty. A bond, a queen, an end to the whispering about his judgment. He pushed open the doors. The hall was blue. Every brazier, every candle, every flame along the pillars burned the cold color of deep water. The nobles stood rigid, hands at their throats, and nobody was whispering. That silence frightened him more than the color did. At the center of the floor, below the dais, a girl in a plain gray gown stood alone with one foot half raised, as if the world had stopped in the middle of her step. Something struck his chest. Not a blow. A pull, as though someone had hooked a line through his ribs and drawn it tight. His wolf, silent for weeks, slammed against his skin with a sound like a held breath finally let go. Mine. Kael did not break stride. A king's face was a wall. His father had taught him that with a belt, and he had learned it well. But his fist closed at his side until the signet ring bit into his palm, and he welcomed the pain, because it gave him something to hold. Seraphina felt him before she saw him. Heat reached her first, a line of it down her spine, then the hush of the crowd parting like cloth tearing. Beneath her ribs, in a place that had been hollow her whole life, something stirred. It was not a voice. It was a turning over, the way a sleeper shifts toward a sound. Her breath snagged. The small lit window flared so bright it hurt. Her knees went loose. She locked them. She would not fall. Not here. Above her, the great chandelier swayed though no wind moved. The blue flames bent toward her, all of them, like a field of flowers turning to the sun. She turned. He was taller than she had imagined. Black hair. Steel-grey eyes. A scar running beneath his collar. A silver crown that looked less like jewelry than a verdict. He stopped six paces away, and his gaze moved over her face, her plain gown, her shaking hands. Something in his expression closed like a gate. She saw it happen. She saw the exact moment the man behind his eyes stepped back and the king stepped forward. Her stomach dropped the way it did on the garden wall when a stone gave way under her heel. The priestess found her voice. It cracked on the first word. "The Moon has spoken. Seraphina Vale and Kael Draven Blackthorn are fated mates." For one heartbeat, nothing. Then the whispers rose like floodwater. The Vale girl. She has no wolf. There must be a mistake. Somebody laughed, a short, disbelieving bark. A woman near the dais lifted a hand to her mouth, and a man behind her murmured something that made his companion wince. Near the front, Cassandra Wolfe stood with her golden head very still and her face drained to the color of milk. Her gloved hands had curled into fists. Seraphina saw all of it at the edge of her vision. She kept her eyes on Kael. Mira had gone rigid at the edge of the crowd, a honey cake forgotten in her hand. Rowan, near the pillars, had closed his eyes like a man bracing for a blow. Neither of them moved to reach her. There was nowhere to reach from, and no one willing to cross it. Seraphina's hand lifted. Barely. An inch, maybe less, the way you might reach toward a skittish animal, or toward something you had wanted so long you no longer trusted it was real. Her fingers shook in the blue light. He looked at her hand. Not at her face. Then he stepped back. One pace. Another. The space between them opened, colder than any wind she had ever stood in. A muscle jumped in his jaw, and his knuckles whitened against his thigh. He did not look away from the floor between them, as though the distance were a thing he was measuring and approving. Inside him, his wolf howled. He heard it. He ignored it. He had ignored worse. It clawed at him anyway, raking the inside of his chest, furious, bewildered. For the first time in his life his own body refused to obey him. He pressed his tongue against his teeth and held the line, and his face showed nothing at all. "The court has heard the Moon's word," Kael said. His voice reached every corner of the hall without effort. "I have heard it too." Seraphina's hand was still in the air. She could not remember how to lower it. Heat climbed her neck and flooded her face. Her ears rang loudly now. Her palms had gone slick, and the silk at her wrists clung to her like wet paper. Every pair of eyes in the room seemed to land on her at once, like hands. Her lips parted. Nothing came out. Her tongue felt too large for her mouth. She had spent nineteen years learning to take a blow without making a sound, and still her throat tried to form a question, one small word, why, before she crushed it flat. Behind her ribs, the stirring stopped. Not faded. Stopped, sharply, the way a breath stops when a door slams. Something that had just begun to wake pulled back into the dark, and she felt it go. Kael lifted his chin. "I refuse it," he said. "I will not take a woman without a wolf as my queen." Far beneath the hall, something heard him, and smiled.
