Chapter 2
2
Memories of our time together flashed through my mind. No wonder he had pursued me so relentlessly.
I clenched my fists in agony.
Kayden and I had met during a fire department training exercise.
As a firefighter, he had led us through their intense drills.
During a rappelling exercise, I had accidentally cut my arm on some broken glass.
At the time, he called me a total airhead while casually tossing a bottle of antiseptic at me.
When the wound still wouldn't stop bleeding that evening, he looked at me with genuine shock.
To stop everyone from worrying, I admitted that I had a rare blood type.
From that day on, he became a completely different person, showering me with endless care.
Before I left the training camp, he even proposed to me in front of all his cheering colleagues.
He told me that as long as the mountains stood, his love for me would never change. He promised he would never let me be in danger.
Now I realized he just saw me as a walking blood bank.
There was no true love. All those promises were nothing but a long, calculated lie.
When he didn't get a response from me, he kept shouting, making the nurse's expression turn from awkward to angry.
"Your girlfriend's blood vessel has ruptured! she's at risk of bleeding out any second! Get down to the ER right now!"
Kayden's cursing stopped abruptly. After a moment of silence, he agreed to come over immediately.
Hearing his promise, the nurse offered me a gentle smile.
"Don't worry. Once your boyfriend is here, no matter how rich that other woman is, they won't dare stop your surgery."
She thought having someone by my side would give me peace of mind, but she didn't know that the man who had stolen the doctors was my boyfriend.
Just as I was about to explain, a doctor's shout echoed from outside. "Is Bianca Whitmore's family here? Sign for the medication."
Kayden, who had just opened the door to my room, spun around and ran back out, yelling, "I'm here! Doctor, how's my wife doing?"
As the door swung shut, the pain in my heart grew unbearable.
What was I to him?
Overwhelmed by emotion, my vision went black, and I passed out again.
The throbbing pain in my leg eventually forced me to open my eyes.
This time, Kayden was actually standing in front of me. His rage was gone, replaced by a gentle look as he kissed my hand.
"Sera, why are you so stubborn? Why did you run off? I told you to head for the clear zones, look at your injury now..."
"Do you have any idea how much you scared me? Thank God my team was there to pull you out..."
The redness in his eyes made me feel physically sick.
If he truly loved me, he wouldn't have left me in the fire.
If he were truly worried, he wouldn't have failed to see me in the ER while demanding I give blood.
Every word sounded like concern, but it was really just an attempt to shift the blame onto me.
Feeling the warmth of his hand, I pulled mine away with all my might.
Kayden stared at his empty hand, looking bewildered. "Sera, are you seriously still mad at me?"
"I didn't want to leave you in that building, but I had no choice. Saving her will give us a much better life."
"You don't want to live in a crappy rental after we're married, right? I just have to stay with her until Mr. Montgomery arrives, then I'm done."
The more he spoke, the more pained his expression became. He looked at me with pleading eyes.
"Sera, I know you're upset about the baby. I can explain. She needs a child to inherit the Montgomery fortune, so..."
"But don't worry, that kid won't change anything between us. I won't even go to see him."
"Please forgive me. You can hit me or yell at me, just don't give me the silent treatment, okay?"
