Chapter 2 The Contract II

His thumb pressed against her pulse. Panic flared, hot and suffocating in the tight confines of the car. Maeve's immediate instinct was to shrink back, to apologize, to make herself as small and invisible as she had been her entire life. But Vivienne wouldn't shrink. Vivienne would bare her teeth and bite back.

Maeve forced a harsh, breathless scoff, channeling every ounce of her sister's entitled venom. She slapped her palm against Caspian's solid chest, shoving at him-though it felt like trying to push against a block of solid granite. "I'm shaking because you left me sitting in the freezing damp while you played Batman in the shadows," she snapped, her voice hitting the exact imperious, grating pitch Vivienne used on valets and personal assistants. "I told your driver to keep the heat on, but apparently, you employ deaf incompetents."

Caspian didn't move immediately. His silver eyes roamed over her face in the dim light, sharp, dissecting, and entirely devoid of amusement. His thumb dragged a millimeter across her skin, feeling the frantic, hummingbird flutter of her heartbeat, before he slowly withdrew his hand. "My apologies," he murmured, though there was zero contrition in the icy modulation of his tone. "I wanted to ensure my bride arrived in one piece. The roads are notoriously treacherous tonight."

*You mean you wanted to ensure the collateral arrived,* Maeve thought, her heart hammering relentlessly against her ribs. He stepped out of the car into the downpour, extending a large hand to help her out. The freezing rain immediately lashed at the delicate, exposed silk of her gown. She pointedly ignored his offered hand, gathering the heavy, expensive skirts and stepping onto the wet gravel on her own. It was a defiant gesture she desperately prayed looked like Vivienne's trademark arrogance rather than Maeve's visceral terror of his touch.

The interior of the Croft estate was a temple to brutalist dominance. There was no warmth, no welcoming foyer. Polished obsidian floors stretched endlessly under the harsh, angular glow of hidden LED strip lights. The art on the walls consisted of sharp, abstract metal sculptures that looked more like medieval weaponry than decoration. Vast expanses of concrete and bulletproof glass overlooked the turbulent sea, the waves crashing violently against the cliffs far below. Heavily built men in tailored suits stood at the periphery of the shadows, their hands resting loosely near the lapels of their jackets. This wasn't a marital home; it was a fortress, and Caspian Croft was the warlord holding court.

He didn't lead her to a chapel or a decorated parlor. He led her deeper into the compound, down a soundproofed corridor, and into a cavernous boardroom dominated by a massive black marble table. Waiting at the far end was an older man with predatory eyes and a sleek leather briefcase-Caspian's head counsel. There were no flowers. No music. No family to witness the union. There was only the sterile, transactional reality of the corporate merger masquerading as matrimony.

"The addendums have been finalized per the latest negotiations," the lawyer stated flatly, not bothering to offer a congratulatory smile or even stand when she entered. He pushed a thick stack of heavy vellum paper across the dark marble, along with a weighty Montblanc fountain pen. "Sign where indicated, Ms. Vance. Your thumbprint will also be required on the final page."

Maeve stared down at the dotted line. This was the precipice. Caspian stood directly beside her, so close the heat radiating from his large frame was a stark, almost magnetic contrast to the freezing temperature of the room. She could feel the heavy, oppressive weight of his silver stare on the side of her face. She picked up the pen. The engraved metal was ice-cold against her trembling fingers. She took a slow, measured breath, forcing her muscles to relax, commanding her hand to steady.

Vivienne's signature wasn't just a name; it was an act of aggression. It was large, looping, and wildly inconsistent, always ending with an arrogant slash crossing the 't' and a sharp, jagged underline. Maeve had spent hours locked in her bathroom, practicing it until her wrist cramped, but executing it in a sketchbook was entirely different from executing it under the hawkish gaze of a man who killed for sport.

The gold nib of the pen met the paper. *Scratch.* The sound was deafening in the silent room. With every looping letter, Maeve felt pieces of her true self being severed and cast into the void. She was legally anchoring herself to the epicenter of the city's criminal syndicate. If the pen stuttered, if the angle of the 'V' was too narrow, Caspian would know. He was a man built on data, algorithms, and the microscopic observation of human flaws. He monetized secrets, and she was handing him a forged document that effectively stole millions of dollars in corporate assets.

A bead of cold sweat formed at the nape of her neck beneath the heavy silk veil. She couldn't afford the luxury of a conscience right now. Vivienne's blood on the Persian rug flashed brightly behind her eyes-a brutal, graphic reminder of the stakes. If she failed, her parents would face federal indictment before the week was out, and she would join her twin sister in whatever unmarked grave Caspian's cleaners had utilized. She forced the final, violent slash of ink beneath the name. *Vivienne Vance.*

The forgery was flawless. But as the lawyer swiftly pulled the documents away to stamp them, an overwhelming, suffocating wave of grief threatened to choke her. Maeve, the quiet archivist, the girl who loved the smell of old paper and the safety of the shadows, was officially dead. There was no going back. She belonged to Caspian now.

"It's done," the lawyer said, snapping the locks of the briefcase shut with a sharp *clack*. He vanished from the room like a ghost, leaving Maeve entirely alone with her terrifying new husband.

Caspian walked to a sleek, integrated wet bar hidden within the concrete wall. The soft, elegant pop of a cork echoed over the rhythmic sound of the rain lashing the reinforced windows. "To a mutually beneficial partnership," Caspian said, his voice dropping an octave, rumbling with dark intent as he turned back around. In his large hands, he held two crystal flutes.

Maeve recognized the pale gold liquid immediately. It was the obscure, highly specific vintage of Dom Pérignon that Vivienne had demanded in her contract rider-a petty, irritating power play simply to prove she could make a billionaire jump through hoops on his wedding night.

Exhaustion and the crashing wave of fading adrenaline warred in Maeve's veins. She reached out and took the proffered flute, her mind already racing ahead, calculating her next move, planning the blind spots in the security cameras she had memorized from the blueprints to search his private office tonight.

Without thinking, her own pragmatic, deeply ingrained reflexes took over. Instead of wrapping her palm around the bowl of the glass to warm the champagne-the pretentious, entirely incorrect way Vivienne always drank it-Maeve's slender fingers grasped the delicate crystal stem, holding it with textbook elegance and precision.

Caspian stopped. His own glass, hovering inches from his mouth, froze in mid-air.

The silence in the room suddenly turned sharp enough to draw blood. Maeve watched, her breath catching in her throat, as his pale silver eyes slowly dropped, locking onto her fingers wrapped securely around the crystal stem. The kinetic energy in his body shifted in a fraction of a second, morphing from relaxed confidence to a coiled, terrifying focus.

"That's interesting," Caspian murmured softly, his voice a razor blade slicing through the quiet room. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, his gaze lifting from her hands to burn directly into her terrified eyes. "You always claimed holding the stem ruined the chill... Vivienne."
