Chapter 1
"Mrs. Oliver, you're back."
Ellie pushed open the heavy oak door of the Upper East Side townhouse. The bitter Manhattan wind followed her inside, but the chill inside the foyer was sharper than the December storm. On the herringbone parquet floor sat a pair of nude patent leather stilettos that did not belong to her. Snow melted off the four-inch heels, leaving dirty puddles on the polished wood.
Ellie stared at the shoes. Her right index finger twitched, rubbing the hard surgical callus along its side. Thirty-six hours on her feet in the trauma ward had left her shoulders stiff, but her posture did not bend.
A light, mocking laugh drifted from the living room down the dimly lit hallway.
Ellie stepped out of her winter boots and walked toward the archway. Beneath the amber glow of the sconces, Vanessa Hayes lounged across the custom Italian velvet sofa.
Vanessa was wearing Ellie's silk robe. The emerald silk was draped loosely over her shoulders, left intentionally open at the collar to reveal the small brown mole sitting just beneath her right clavicle.
Hearing footsteps, Vanessa set her glass of pinot noir on the marble table. She stood up quickly, feigning panic, but took a deliberate step forward to block the staircase leading to the second floor.
"You're home early," Vanessa murmured, biting her lower lip. Her wide eyes brimmed with manufactured innocence.
Ellie stopped two paces away. Her amber eyes swept over the emerald robe, her expression flat, devoid of any visible warmth or surprise. She said nothing.
Heavy, measured footsteps echoed down the staircase. Ephram Oliver stepped into view, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the neck, sleeves rolled to his forearms. The solid gold Oliver family crest ring on his left pinky caught the low light as he adjusted his cuffs.
Ephram's gray-green eyes drifted between the two women before settling on Ellie with an immediate, practiced irritation.
"You startled her, Ellie," Ephram said. He stepped beside Vanessa, his hand settling naturally on the curve of her waist. His tone was dismissive, as if scolding a child for making noise.
Ellie looked at his hand resting against her emerald robe. Her chest did not ache. The pain had burned out months ago, leaving behind only dry, cold ash.
"Take off my robe," Ellie said. Her voice was steady, quiet, and sharp.
Vanessa's eyes immediately watered. She shrank back into Ephram's chest.
"Miss Stark, you misunderstood," Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling. "I spilled wine on my dress. Ephram just told me to put this on so I wouldn't freeze."
The deliberate use of Miss Stark instead of Mrs. Oliver hung in the air.
Ellie's hands tightened inside the pockets of her wool coat. Her knuckles turned bloodless white against the lining.
Ephram frowned, his patience visibly wearing thin. He tugged at his open collar.
"It's just a piece of fabric, Ellie. Do you have to make a scene out of every minor detail? Where are your manners?"
"Manners are reserved for decent people," Ellie said.
She pulled her right hand from her pocket, holding a stiff manila folder.
She stepped forward and slapped the folder down onto the black-and-white marble coffee table. The sharp crack echoed through the cavernous living room.
Ephram's eyes dropped to the paper. In bold black letters across the top, the header was impossible to miss: Divorce Settlement Agreement.
The room fell dead silent. Vanessa's rehearsed distress froze on her face as she stared at the title.
"Sign it, Ephram," Ellie said, looking directly down at him like a doctor delivering a terminal diagnosis.
Ephram dropped his arm from Vanessa's waist. He closed the distance between himself and Ellie, towering over her with all the inherited entitlement of a Manhattan heir.
"What's your game this time, Ellie?"
"It isn't a game," Ellie replied, tilting her chin up without flinching. "It's an announcement. We're done."
Ephram let out a dry, harsh laugh. He snatched the document off the table and flipped through the first two pages with careless disdain.
"Divorce? With what leverage, Ellie? The Stark family went bankrupt two years ago. Your father is hiding from creditors, and you have nothing." He tossed the papers back onto the table. "You walk away from me, and you won't even be able to afford the rent on a studio in Queens."
Vanessa spoke up from behind him, her voice sickeningly sweet.
"Ephram, don't be too hard on her. She's just exhausted from her hospital shifts..."
Ellie did not spare Vanessa a glance. Her eyes remained locked on her husband.
"That's my problem to solve. My attorney will contact your legal team in the morning."
She turned on her heel and walked back toward the foyer. She did not look at the silk robe, nor did she look back at the man she had spent three years trying to save.
Behind her, Ephram snapped. He kicked the heavy marble table with the toe of his leather shoe. A crystal glass fell and shattered across the floorboards.
"If you walk out that door tonight, Ellie, don't ever crawl back begging!" Ephram roared, his voice bouncing off the high ceilings.
Ellie's hand rested on the freezing brass handle of the front door. She did not turn around.
"I won't."
She pulled the door open and stepped out, letting the heavy wood slam shut behind her.
