Chapter 2

Alexander Sterling woke with a familiar sense of order. His routine was precise. 6:00 AM alarm. 6:15 AM espresso, black. 6:30 AM market review. Emily usually had his preferred newspaper, The Wall Street Journal, laid out by his plate. This morning, the dining table was bare. A minor irritation. She was probably flustered, preparing for her… transition. He glanced at the clock. 7:00 AM. She should have reported to him by now about Sophia’s dietary preferences, which he’d asked her to ascertain yesterday. He walked through the silent penthouse. Her bedroom door was slightly ajar. He pushed it open. The bed was perfectly made. Too perfectly. As if it hadn’t been slept in. A flicker of unease. He checked her closet. Half-empty. Her scent, a faint, almost non-existent floral he’d once tolerated, was fading. He frowned. This wasn’t like Emily. She was meticulously compliant. Annoyingly so, at times. He pulled out his phone, dialed her number. Straight to voicemail. “Emily, where are you? Call me immediately.” His tone was sharp, a command. He tried again. Voicemail. A knot of something unfamiliar tightened in his chest. Not anger, not yet. More like… disruption. He called his assistant, Thompson. “Thompson, is Mrs. Sterling at one of her ludicrous charity meetings?” “No, Mr. Sterling. Her schedule is clear today. It’s… the final day of the agreement, sir.” Thompson’s voice was carefully neutral. “I’m aware of the date,” Alexander snapped. “She was given new instructions yesterday. She hasn’t acknowledged them.” Silence on the other end. “Find her,” Alexander ordered. “And Thompson? Freeze her supplementary credit card. The one linked to my primary account.” A pause. “Sir,” Thompson said, his voice hesitant. “Mrs. Sterling’s supplementary card… it’s never been activated. In five years, she hasn’t used it once.” Alexander froze. Never used it? He’d given it to her the first week. A platinum card with a limitless ceiling. A gesture. A tool. He remembered her then, five years younger. Eager, a little scared, but with a spark in her eyes. He’d told her he disliked overt makeup, strong perfumes. The spark had dimmed. He’d told her a Sterling wife did not seek public attention. She had retreated into the silent, vast apartment. He’d assumed she was like all the others. Eager for the money, the status. Five years. No extravagant purchases. No shopping sprees down Fifth Avenue. The fifty thousand a year was substantial, yes. But the card… The knot in his chest tightened further, morphing into a strange, disquieting ache. He hung up on Thompson without a word. He strode back to Emily’s room, a sudden, desperate urgency propelling him. He flung open drawers, cupboards. Nothing. Just neat, empty spaces. She wouldn’t just leave. Not Emily. She was… dependent. He’d made sure of it. Then he saw it, on the polished surface of her vanity table. A single, folded sheet of official-looking paper. His breath caught. He snatched it up. *MARRIAGE TERMINATION AGREEMENT.* His name was there. Her name was there. Signatures. Dated five years ago, at the same time as the marriage contract. A standard clause. Mutually agreed dissolution upon completion of the five-year term. He’d forgotten. Or rather, he’d never considered it truly binding if *he* didn’t wish it to be. “No,” he whispered. Then louder, “No!” He ripped the document in half, then again, the pieces fluttering to the expensive carpet. “This isn’t over, Emily! I decide when it’s over!” He felt a surge of rage, followed by a chilling wave of… something akin to panic. She couldn’t do this. She wouldn’t dare. He grabbed his phone again, his fingers fumbling as he tried her number. Voicemail. He threw the phone across the room. It hit the wall with a sickening crack and clattered to the floor. The silence of the penthouse pressed in on him, vast and suffocating. She was gone.

That's everything available right now.
