Chapter 1

The urologist’s office felt cold. “Ethan, your sperm count is extremely low,” Dr. Ramirez said, his voice gentle but firm. The words hung in the sterile air of the Austin clinic. Months of trying with Chloe, his wife of seven years, their college sweetheart, co-founder of their tech startup. It all led to this. A quiet, devastating blow. He drove home to their Zilker neighborhood house, the Texas sun a harsh glare. Chloe was waiting, her face pale, eyes wide. “Ethan,” she started, her voice trembling, “I… I’m pregnant.” The world tilted. “Pregnant?” He heard his own voice, distant. “But… Dr. Ramirez just told me. My count…” Chloe burst into tears. “It was after that work conference in New Orleans,” she sobbed. “Liam… the designer from the marketing firm. It was just one night. Too much alcohol, so much stress with the launch.” Liam Walker. Younger, charismatic. Ethan had met him. Disliked him instantly. “I swear, Ethan, it meant nothing. I’ll end it. I’ll… I’ll terminate the pregnancy.” Ten years together. A decade of shared dreams, struggles, building their company from nothing in a tiny South Congress apartment. His heart felt like a shattered thing in his chest. But her vows, their history… “Okay, Chloe,” he said, the words tasting like ash. “Okay. We fix this.” He chose to believe her.

Six months passed. Six months of strained smiles and careful silences. He’d thrown himself into work, securing a crucial deal on a business trip. He returned to Austin, straight to the fertility clinic for a follow-up. Maybe a miracle. He sat in the waiting area, a familiar dread coiling in his stomach. Then he saw her. Chloe. Very pregnant. Glowing, even. And on her arm, beaming, was Liam Walker. They were laughing, Liam’s hand resting possessively on her swollen belly. Chloe looked up, saw Ethan. Her smile froze. He walked over, his legs feeling strangely steady. “Chloe.” She paled. Liam looked from Ethan to Chloe, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. “Ethan, I… I couldn’t go through with it,” she stammered, avoiding his gaze. “I felt a… a responsibility. To Liam. To the baby.” The deceit was a physical weight. He felt so tired. He looked at her, then at Liam. “Fine,” Ethan said, his voice calm, devoid of inflection. He turned, walked to the reception desk. Pulled out his phone, dialed a New York number he knew by heart. Sophia Hayes. His childhood friend. Wealthy, powerful, a venture capitalist. She answered on the second ring. “Sophia.” “Ethan? What’s wrong?” Her voice, always sharp, softened with concern. “Chloe’s having another man’s baby,” he said, the words flat. “I’m done.” He paused. “That offer you made… half-jokingly, years ago… still open?” Silence on the line. Then, a rush of fierce emotion. “Ethan Miller, you better not be kidding!” Sophia’s voice cracked. “I’ve been waiting my whole life for this!” A small, wry smile touched Ethan’s lips. “Meet me in Las Vegas. Three days. Bring your ID.” He hung up. Just then, his name was called. Dr. Ramirez. In the exam room, the doctor smiled. “Ethan, I have some surprising news. Your sperm count… it’s completely normal. Excellent, in fact.” Ethan stared. Normal. He thought of Chloe and Liam in the lobby, their shared laughter. He thought of the tiny South Congress apartment, her promises whispered in the dark. “Cancel my IVF, Doctor,” Ethan said, his voice clear. “My… old life is over.” He walked out of the clinic, past Chloe and Liam, without a glance. He drove straight to his lawyer.
