Chapter 2
The next morning, the lie continued. Julian brought me breakfast in bed, a perfect omelet and fresh orange juice. He was attentive, charming, the perfect husband.
I felt nothing. The love I' d had for him was gone, replaced by a cold, clear-eyed calm. He thought I was a naive girl from the wrong side of the tracks, blinded by his wealth and power. He was wrong.
My background wasn't a weakness; it was my strength. Before Julian, I was a community organizer. I knew how to find information, how to connect with people, how to see the patterns others missed.
After he left for Capitol Hill, I started digging.
I didn't need a private investigator. I had something better: my network. I started with old yearbooks I found in the attic, dusty relics from his prep school days. Julian and Brooke, king and queen of the prom, their smiles bright and confident.
Then I went online. I reactivated an old, anonymous social media account. It took me hours, but I found the digital breadcrumbs. Hidden photo albums, tagged posts from mutual friends, a whole world of his past he thought was buried.
The trip to Italy he' d taken me on for our honeymoon? He' d gone to the same places with Brooke the summer after their high school graduation. The antique locket he gave me for my birthday? A near-identical one hung around Brooke's neck in a photo from five years ago.
Every special moment, every "unique" gift, was a recycled memory. I wasn't his new love; I was her shadow, a stand-in he was using until he could get the real thing back.
The final piece fell into place when I called Maria.
"Maria, I need a favor," I said, keeping my voice low.
"Anything for you, Elara. What's wrong? You sound... different."
Maria owned a diner and a fleet of food trucks. Her husband, a former Marine named David, ran a private security firm. They were my real family, my rock.
"I need you to look into someone. Federal prosecutor. Mr. Peterson."
"Give me an hour," she said, no questions asked.
Fifty minutes later, my phone buzzed. It was a text from Maria. A single file attached. It was a dossier, compiled by David' s firm. It was all there: Peterson's reputation, his predatory behavior, the whispers of his weakness for pregnant women. And a list of his known associates, the people he met with "off the books."
One name made my stomach clench: Leo. Brooke' s brother. David' s sources confirmed they' d met twice in the last month at a discreet bar downtown.
The plan I overheard wasn't a drunken fantasy. It was real. It was happening.
I closed the file, my hands steady. The shock was gone. The hurt was still there, a dull ache deep inside, but it was being eclipsed by something else.
Rage. Cold and hard as steel.
Julian thought he was sacrificing a pawn. He had no idea he was about to go to war.
