Chapter 2

2

My soul followed Fiona as she rushed to the private hospital wing. She burst into the luxury suite, her face pale with worry.

"Donny, how are you feeling? Are you okay?"

Donny was propped up against the pillows. He looked pale and fragile, the perfect picture of a victim.

"Thank you for coming, Fiona," he whispered. "I feel a bit better now."

"I know how busy you are with the vineyard. You're too good to me."

His voice was weak, and he winced, clutching his chest every few seconds. Fiona's eyes welled up with tears at the sight of his struggle.

At home, she never touched a spatula. I did every chore, cooked every meal, and took care of everything.

But here she was, personally blowing on a bowl of porridge to feed him. She moved around the room like a devoted servant.

"Donny, I'm so sorry I let this happen to you," she murmured.

"Don't worry. I've locked Callum in a barrel. He's being punished for what he did!"

"Once he's had enough time to reflect, I'll bring him here. He'll apologize to you on his hands and knees."

The more she spoke, the angrier she got. She looked like she wanted to kill me all over again.

Donny reached out and squeezed her hand. He gave her a look of pure, saintly understanding.

"He probably didn't mean it, Fiona. Don't be too hard on him."

"I don't care what happens to me. I just don't want to ruin your marriage."

Fiona looked like her heart was breaking. She was so moved by his fake kindness.

"You're too good for this world, Donny! That's why he thinks he can walk all over you!"

"I promise you, I'll make him pay back every bit of suffering he caused you. Double."

Donny looked away, his eyes turning red as he shook his head. He was playing her like a professional.

"Just knowing you care is enough. Let him go, Fiona. He's your husband, after all."

"Even though I was terrified I'd never see you again when I passed out…"

He let out a long, dramatic sigh. "I've decided to move back to London. I shouldn't be here causing trouble."

A single tear rolled down his cheek. He looked so devastated, so lonely.

"No! Donny, don't leave!" Fiona cried out, panic written all over her face.

She threw herself into his arms, begging him to stay. She promised him that I would never bother him again.

"If he ever hurts you again, I'll divorce him on the spot! I mean it!"

"You know the only reason I married him was because I was forced. I never loved him."

Donny finally calmed down under her desperate affection. He leaned into her embrace.

"I know, Fiona. I just want to be near you…"

I stared at the woman I had loved for ten years. My heart felt like it was being hollowed out.

Donny was the man who had abandoned her years ago, yet she still chose his lies over me. She was cold to everyone else, but she turned into a different person for him.

The two of them started kissing right there in the hospital room. They didn't care who was watching.

I was forced to witness every second of it. Ever since I died, it felt like my soul was tethered to her by an invisible chain.

I couldn't feel physical pain anymore, but my heart still ached. It felt like I was back in that barrel, suffocating all over again.
