Chapter 1

The party' s noise was a dull hum in the background. I stood on the balcony of Liam' s penthouse, the city lights spread out below like a carpet of scattered diamonds.

A cool breeze touched my skin, but I barely felt it.

All I could feel was the smooth, heavy weight of the velvet box in my pocket. Inside was the watch I' d saved for months to buy him, an anniversary gift for the five years we' d spent together.

Liam Miller. My Liam. The brilliant, ambitious tech entrepreneur who was supposed to be my future. We' d built a life together, dreamed of houses I would design and a family we would raise. Tonight was a celebration for his company' s latest funding round, but for me, it was about us.

I was about to go back inside and find him when I heard his voice from the other side of the sliding glass door. It was slightly open, just enough for the sound to carry.

"It' s all set, Dad. The wedding is in two weeks."

My breath caught in my throat. Wedding? I must have misheard. My hand trembled, my fingers clenching around the box in my pocket.

"What about Chloe?" His father' s voice was lower, concerned.

A short, dismissive laugh from Liam. "Chloe doesn' t need to know. Not yet. She' s… comfortable. She loves me. After Sophia and I are married, I' ll set her up in a nice apartment. She can be my girl on the side. It' s the perfect arrangement. I get the Hayes family connections, and I still get to keep the woman I actually enjoy being with."

The world tilted. The city lights blurred into a sickening smear of color. I felt a wave of nausea so strong I had to grip the railing to keep from falling. My mind was a blank, white space, unable to process the words. Mistress. He said he would keep me as his mistress.

The casual cruelty in his tone was what broke me. It wasn't a difficult decision for him. It was a business plan. I was a line item, an asset to be managed. The five years we shared, the love I thought was the foundation of my life, it was all a lie he was willing to sell for a better deal.

I backed away from the door silently, my body moving on its own. I couldn't breathe. My lungs felt tight and empty. Each heartbeat was a painful thud against my ribs. I stumbled back into the crowded living room, the cheerful music and laughter suddenly sounding monstrous and distorted.

People smiled and nodded at me. Someone handed me a glass of champagne. I took it, my hand shaking so badly that the liquid sloshed over the rim. I saw him then, across the room, schmoozing with a group of investors. He looked so handsome, so confident. He was a fraud. A beautiful, charming fraud.

He caught my eye and smiled, a warm, intimate smile meant only for me. It was the same smile he' d given me this morning when he kissed me goodbye. The smile that promised forever. My stomach twisted. The champagne glass slipped from my numb fingers and shattered on the polished floor.

Several people turned to look. The sound was sharp and violent in the loud room. Liam' s smile faltered, a flicker of annoyance crossing his face before being replaced with practiced concern. He started walking toward me, his expression a perfect mask of a loving boyfriend.

"Chloe? Honey, are you okay?" he asked, his voice full of the fake warmth I now recognized.

I didn' t answer. I just stared at him, at the man I thought I knew. I saw the lie in his eyes. I saw the deception behind his perfect face. He was a stranger.

Without a word, I turned and walked away. I pushed through the crowd, ignoring the confused calls of my name. I walked out of the penthouse, out of the party, and out of the life I had so carefully built with a man who never intended to share it with me. The velvet box in my pocket felt like a stone, dragging me down into a cold, dark place where love didn't exist.
