Chapter 2
The decision settled in my bones, a cold, hard certainty. The first step was to erase myself. I walked into my home office, the space where I' d dreamed up skyscrapers and designed homes for happy families. Now, it felt like a stranger' s room.
I sat at my desk and opened my laptop. My fingers moved with a detached precision. I started with my finances, transferring large sums of money to an offshore account I' d set up years ago for a rainy day. It seemed the storm had finally arrived. I liquidated stocks, sold bonds, moving everything through a series of anonymous digital wallets. Within an hour, Ethan Miller, the successful architect, was financially a ghost.
Next, I called my contact, a man who specialized in creating new identities. No questions asked, for the right price. I gave him the instructions: a new name, a new passport, a clean slate. He promised it would be ready in forty-eight hours.
I was deleting files from my hard drive when I heard the front door open.
"Ethan? I' m home! Happy anniversary, my love."
Olivia' s voice, sweet and melodic, drifted up the stairs. It was a sound that had once been my favorite music. Now, it was just noise.
I closed the laptop and stood up, schooling my features into a mask of weary affection. I walked out to the landing and looked down at her. She was standing in the foyer, holding a bouquet of my favorite flowers, a radiant smile on her face. The sight of her was a physical pain, a sharp twist in my gut.
"Hey," I said, my voice sounding rough to my own ears.
"Just hey?" she pouted, walking up the stairs. "I was expecting a little more enthusiasm on our anniversary." She reached me and wrapped her arms around my neck, pressing a soft kiss to my lips. It felt like being kissed by a stranger. I didn't kiss her back.
"Sorry," I said, pulling away gently. "Long day. The trust paperwork was more complicated than I thought."
Her smile didn' t falter, but a flicker of something, maybe annoyance, crossed her eyes for a split second. "Well, it' s done now. Let' s not think about boring things. I made a reservation at our favorite place."
She was so beautiful, so convincing. For a terrifying moment, I almost cracked. The grief was a physical thing, a lump of concrete in my throat. I wanted to scream at her, to demand answers, to see the mask slip. But I held on to the cold resolve. That was my only anchor now.
"I' m not feeling great, Liv," I said, forcing a note of exhaustion into my voice. "Maybe we can just order in tonight?"
Her face fell with practiced disappointment. "Oh, Ethan. I was so looking forward to it." She stroked my cheek, her touch sending a jolt of revulsion through me. "Are you feeling sick?"
Before I could answer, her phone buzzed on the nightstand. She glanced at it, and a subtle change came over her. A tension in her shoulders, a new focus in her eyes. The screen lit up with a name: Alex.
"I' m sorry, honey," she said, her voice suddenly brisk. "I have to take this. It' s a work emergency." She didn' t wait for my response, just snatched the phone and walked into the bathroom, closing the door behind her.
A work emergency. Alex. The lies were so easy for her.
My heart hammered against my ribs. I had to know. I slipped out of the bedroom and down the stairs, grabbing my car keys from the bowl by the door. I was parked down the street before her car even pulled out of the driveway.
I followed her, keeping a safe distance. She wasn' t heading toward her office. She was driving toward the city' s most exclusive private hospital.
I parked across the street and watched as she hurried inside. A few minutes later, I got out and walked to the entrance. The lobby was hushed and expensive. I saw Olivia at the nurses' station, her voice frantic and high-pitched.
"I' m here for Alex Thorne. I' m his wife. Which room is he in?"
The nurse checked her computer. "Mr. Thorne is in the VIP suite on the top floor. He requested a minor procedure, and for his privacy, Dr. Evans has cleared the entire floor for him."
Cleared the entire floor. For a minor procedure. The level of entitlement, of drama, was staggering. Olivia was already heading for the private elevator, her face a mask of worried devotion.
I felt a bitter, hollow laugh build in my chest. Her husband was at home, feeling sick on their anniversary, and she ran to the side of her other husband, the one who needed a whole hospital floor for a minor issue.
I took a different elevator up to the top floor. The hallway was eerily silent. I crept toward the VIP suite, the door slightly ajar. I could hear their voices inside.
"Oh, Alex, you scared me to death," Olivia was saying, her voice thick with emotion. "When you called, I thought… I thought something terrible had happened."
"It was just a scratch, Liv," Alex' s voice replied, laced with a smug, self-satisfied tone. "A little accident in the workshop. But I knew you' d want to be here."
I peered through the crack in the door. Alex was sitting up in the hospital bed, a small bandage on his arm. Olivia was perched on the edge of the bed, holding his hand, her eyes filled with an adoration I hadn' t seen in years.
"Of course I want to be here," she whispered. "You' re my husband. My real husband."
The words were a final, brutal confirmation. The world tilted on its axis. My real husband. Which made me… what? The fake one. The fool.
