Chapter 3
3
Early the next morning, Kendra surprisingly woke up before me.
She was in the living room doing yoga in skin-tight leggings, showcasing her slender figure.
When she saw me come out, she stopped and brought breakfast from the kitchen.
“Babe, I did some thinking last night. I neglected you in the past, but I promise I’ll be better to you from now on.”
“I stayed up researching cars that fit you best. Take a look, and we’ll head to the dealership right after breakfast.”
Kendra acted as gentle as ever, handing me a brochure of car models.
Seeing the dark circles under her eyes, I felt a lingering pang of sympathy; loving her had become a habit over the years.
I wanted to give our marriage one final chance.
“Okay,” I agreed.
“Awesome! Let’s head out once we finish eating!” Kendra cheered excitedly.
At the auto mall, Kendra and I started browsing the dealerships on her list.
I found a sports car I had dreamed about for years and was just about to take it for a test drive.
Right then, Kendra’s phone rang. She glanced at me nervously before running outside to answer it.
When she returned, she looked panicked. “Babe, I can’t help you pick a car today. Trevor is sick, and I need to go check on him.”
Trevor again!
I snapped, “He’s a grown-ass man. If he’s sick, can’t he go to urgent care? Why does he need you?”
Kendra frowned, defensive. “He just moved back from abroad and doesn’t know his way around. How could I leave him alone?”
Without another word, she turned and walked away, leaving me behind.
I sat frozen in the test-drive car, feeling like an abandoned stray dog.
Ever since Trevor came back, Kendra had turned into a different person, constantly revolving around him.
Whether Trevor was sick, moving, upset, or even when his cat got pregnant, Kendra always rushed over to his side.
Meanwhile, I had become completely invisible, my feelings and needs ignored at every turn.
Thinking of this, I pulled out my phone and dialed a number.
“Mr. Kane, I’ve decided to take the project. I can start immediately.”
Harrison Kane chuckled on the other end. “Carson, my boy, you’ve finally come around! It’s a grueling project, but once it’s done, you’re looking at a life-changing payday.”
Hanging up, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief wash over me.
Over the years, I had turned down countless career opportunities just to stay by Kendra’s side and take care of her.
People say loving someone is like nurturing a delicate rose. I had pampered her into full bloom.
Yet her petals blossomed for another man, so why should I continue to torture myself?
It was time to focus on myself; loving yourself first is never the wrong choice.
Leaving the dealership, I hailed a cab and headed straight to Trevor’s apartment.
I wanted to see for myself what fatal illness required another man’s wife to nurse him around the clock.
That's everything available right now.
