Chapter 2
Clara leaned against the cool, marble-paneled wall of the hallway, trying to force air into lungs that felt like they were collapsing. A bitter taste rose in her throat. The shaking started in her hands and spread through her entire body, a tremor born of cold and a deep, cellular humiliation. A soft ding from the end of the corridor broke the silence. The elevator doors slid open. The club's manager, a man she recognized as Mr. Davies, stepped out, followed by two imposing security guards. They moved with a nervous energy, flanking the elevator entrance as if awaiting royalty. The entire atmosphere of the hallway shifted, becoming tense and charged. A tall figure emerged from the elevator, moving with a lazy, almost predatory grace that commanded the space around him. He was all sharp angles and shadows, and he made the opulent hallway feel small. Clara instinctively pressed herself further against the wall, trying to become invisible. Her luck had run out. The man stopped directly in front of her. His shadow fell over her, a sudden eclipse that blocked the dim light and made her feel even more exposed. A low voice, laced with a rough, mocking amusement, rumbled from above her. "Lost, little lamb? Or just enjoying the fine art of standing in a corner?" Her head snapped up. She found herself looking into a pair of eyes so dark and intense they seemed to pull her in. They were filled with a sharp intelligence and a blatant, assessing curiosity. She knew that face. Everyone in New York knew that face. Julian Carlisle. Heir to the Carlisle Group, the city's most notorious and untouchable devil. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out. She was trapped in his gaze, a butterfly pinned to a board. His eyes drifted over her, taking in the thin dress, her bare arms, finally settling on her reddened eyes. A slow, unreadable smile played on his lips. Just then, the door to the suite opened. Ethan poked his head out, his face a mask of irritation that instantly morphed into one of fawning respect when he saw who was there. "Julian. You're here." Julian didn't even glance at him. His attention remained fixed on Clara. He tilted his head slightly. "Are you with them?" A silent scream of no echoed in her mind, but the word died on her lips. How could she deny it here, in front of everyone? He seemed to read her thoughts. A soft, humorless chuckle escaped him. He pushed open the suite door and walked in, the force of his presence pulling her along in his wake. The moment Julian Carlisle entered the room, everyone was on their feet. The air crackled with a mixture of fear and sycophancy. He wore a faded, army-green jacket that looked like it had seen better days, a stark contrast to the sea of designer suits. It should have looked out of place. On him, it looked like a statement of power. A man named Preston Montgomery, ever the suck-up, tried to bridge the awkward silence. "Mr. Carlisle, is that the new season from Balenciaga? Looks incredible." Julian gave him a lazy, dismissive glance. "This? Sixty-nine bucks. From a vintage shop in Brooklyn." A stunned silence fell over the room, followed by a few nervous, forced chuckles. No one dared question him. He had just demonstrated, with a few words, that he operated on a plane far above their petty rules of status and wealth. He waved a hand dismissively. "Sit, sit. Don't let me ruin your fun." They sat, but the fun was gone. The room now revolved around him. He was the sun, and they were just planets caught in his orbit. Clara stood awkwardly by the door, a forgotten piece of furniture. There were no empty seats. All she wanted was to disappear, to melt into the floorboards. She began to inch her way back toward the door, hoping to slip out unnoticed. She had taken only a single, silent step when his voice cut through the room again. It wasn't loud, but it carried, sharp and clear. "Where do you think you're going?" Clara froze, her body rigid. Every eye in the room swiveled back to her. She was trapped in the spotlight once again.
