Chapter 2 The Dangerous Agreement

The words hung heavy in the air. Marry me.

Amara thought she had misheard him. Her pulse quickened, her thoughts scrambled. She had expected anything-mockery, insult, even a threat-but not this.

"You can't be serious," she whispered, her voice barely steady.

Adrian Cole's gaze did not falter. He leaned back in the chair he had claimed as his own, crossing his legs with the casual arrogance of a man who knew no one could defy him. "I never repeat myself, Amara. If I say marriage, I mean marriage."

Her heart hammered. This was absurd. Men like Adrian-powerful, rich, feared-did not just show up in a woman's life to propose marriage. There had to be a hidden reason, a trap waiting to snap.

"Why me?" she finally asked, her fists clenched at her sides. "You don't even know me."

A smirk curved his lips. "I know enough. You're desperate. You're struggling. You need money. And I"-his eyes gleamed with cold certainty-"need a wife."

Amara flinched. The way he said it, so matter-of-fact, made her feel like a pawn on his chessboard.

"I'm not a commodity you can just buy," she snapped, finding a shred of courage.

His smirk widened. "Aren't you? Everyone has a price, Amara. I'm simply giving you yours."

Her breath caught. The arrogance dripping from his voice should have repulsed her, yet there was something magnetic about the way he looked at her-as though he could see straight through her defenses.

"And what exactly would this marriage mean?" she demanded, though her voice shook.

Adrian stood, his tall frame towering over her. He moved closer, each step deliberate, until the scent of his expensive cologne wrapped around her. He lowered his head slightly, his words brushing her ear.

"It means you'll belong to me. In name, in presence, in public. A contract. One year. At the end of it, you'll walk away with more than you've ever dreamed of. Money, security, freedom."

She shivered. Belong. The word tasted dangerous.

"And what if I refuse?"

For the first time, Adrian's smile vanished. His eyes turned to steel. "Then I'll make sure you regret it."

The silence stretched, heavy and suffocating. Amara's throat tightened as she realized she was cornered. She had no power here, no escape.

Her father's debts. The landlord's threats. The endless hunger for stability she couldn't provide for herself. Everything screamed at her to run-but how could she run from a man who controlled the very air she breathed?

Adrian reached into his pocket and slid a sleek black folder onto the table. The bold letters across it made her stomach churn: Marriage Agreement.

"Take your time," he said smoothly, though his eyes warned otherwise. "But not too much. My patience is limited."

And with that, he turned and walked toward the door, leaving her trembling in the echo of his presence.

As the door clicked shut, Amara sank to the floor, clutching her knees to her chest. Her life had been difficult before, but now... now it was spiraling into something she could neither understand nor control.

Her eyes fell on the folder. Its edges gleamed under the light like the blade of a knife.
