Chapter 3
3
March 11th.
I bit my lip until I tasted copper. Tears streamed down my face.
The weight of his betrayal was crushing me. I remembered that day clearly.
I had a severe flare-up and almost fainted from the pain.
The housekeeper wanted to call Grant. I stopped her.
I knew Grant was closing a massive deal for the company. I didn't want to distract him.
I let out a bitter laugh. I felt like a fool for every sacrifice I had ever made.
I heard footsteps on the stairs. Grant came down in his bathrobe, looking fresh.
I put his phone back and took a deep breath.
"Grant, do you remember your promise? To love me and never betray me?"
He paused while reaching for his phone. Something flickered in his eyes.
He hid it well. He wrapped his arms around me and whispered in my ear.
"Of course. You're the only woman I love. I'll take care of you forever."
I smiled sarcastically. "So, you aren't hiding anything from me?"
Grant realized something was off. He glanced at the coffee table and frowned.
"Maya, what's wrong with you tonight? Are you in a bad mood? You didn't even eat your food."
"I've had a long day at the office. Please, don't start a fight. We can talk tomorrow."
He grabbed his phone and turned to walk away.
I felt something inside me finally snap. Grant, I gave you a chance to be honest.
"Grant, I'm done. We're over."
The living room went silent. The only sound was our breathing.
After a long moment, Grant turned around. He looked shocked and annoyed.
"Do you even hear yourself right now?"
I stood up and looked him in the eye. He looked at me like I was a crazy person.
"Maya, I know I've been busy lately. But you have to understand. The company is going public in two years."
My sarcasm clearly irritated him. He scowled.
"You aren't a child anymore. Grow up. We're getting married next month."
"Do you think it's appropriate to bring up a breakup right now?"
He turned and walked upstairs without looking back.
The irony was nauseating. He didn't think about the wedding when he was devouring that girl at the bar.
My phone buzzed again. It was a message from Lexie.
"Miss Vance, I assume you're messaging me because of Grant?"
"Please don't misunderstand. We're just friends. Nothing happened."
"If you don't believe me, we can meet in person so I can explain."
She was acting so innocent. It was a pathetic attempt at a cover-up.
That's everything available right now.
