Chapter 3

Vesper Thorne POV:

The heavy iron bolt slid into place with a dull, satisfying thud.

A slow breath filled my lungs, carrying the cold, musty scent of ancient timber and dried winter dust. It was the simple, undeniable sensation of life—something I had lost only a short while ago.

In my previous world, I was a Purification Healer in the irradiated ash-wastes. I spent my days in the hazard zones, neutralizing biological mutations, carving necrotic flesh from infected survivors, and taking down aberrant horrors twice my size. It was a life lived on the razor's edge of combat and surgery. My end had come during a high-stakes containment run when an extraction tunnel collapsed, burying my squad under tons of shattered concrete and radioactive fire.

I died in the dark, gasping for air that was no longer there.

I should have stayed dead.

Yet, against all odds, my eyes opened again in this freezing attic, trapped inside the frail, battered body of a girl who had just taken her own life.

Thorne had bled out on these attic floorboards, starved, beaten, and traded away like diseased livestock by her own blood. In the final, ragged gasps of her life, she had not prayed to the Moon Goddess for salvation; she had used her own pooling blood to carve an ancient, forbidden contract into the floorboards.

Take my skin. Take my bones. But make them pay in ash and marrow.

I smiled softly in the dim candlelight, flexing my slender, calloused fingers.

A fair transaction. A second breath in exchange for an extermination.

I have inherited Vesper Thorne's memories. From that moment on, I am Vesper Thorne.

I stepped away from the door and walked to the narrow cot shoved into the corner. Kneeling, I reached deep into the dusty gap between the wooden frame and the stone wall, pulling out a heavy, water-stained leather satchel tied shut with coarse sinew.

Inside lay the legacy of my mother, Yseult.

Yseult had been an elite High Apothecary, and what she left behind was purely professional: thick stacks of meticulously organized clinical notebooks and several crumbling, ancient treatises long thought lost to the empire.

I laid the brittle vellum across the rickety table, flipping through the faded pages under the tallow candle's dim flame.

Her working notes were brilliant. She had recorded the chemical behavior of continental flora, complex distillation methods, and cellular toxicology far ahead of this feudal age. My eyes caught a series of dense diagrams near the center: formulas for neural detoxification, tissue regeneration, and the theoretical restoration of a fractured magical core.

According to Yseult's clinical trials, the wild madness that afflicted high-ranking Lycans was rarely an act of the gods; it was a targeted, physical poisoning that severed the connection between the brain stem and the beast soul. Her notes detailed the exact herbal compounds needed to dissolve the necrotic blockages, soothe the shredded nerves, and jump-start a dormant magical core back to life.

She had the pharmacology, but she lacked the surgical precision to cut open a living body and physically extract the rot.

I, however, had spent a lifetime doing exactly that on battlefield triage slabs.

I closed the volume, a quiet chuckle slipping past my lips.

Lord Kaelen Fenris.

The entire capital spoke his name in terrified whispers, claiming the northern warlord was a rabid, blood-soaked monster chained like a beast in the depths of the Obsidian Fortress. My father and Concetta had gleefully arranged this match, fully expecting him to tear my throat out so they could march their retainers north and claim his vast inheritance as my grieving guardians.

They were fools who knew nothing of predatory biology.

If Kaelen still possessed his catastrophic magical core, a few chains and a damp cellar could never hold him. He would have reduced that fortress to rubble months ago. The fact that he was locked away in iron proved one obvious truth: his magic was suppressed, dormant, or entirely broken.

A mad beast stripped of supernatural fire was merely an unruly patient with oversized teeth.

In the ash-wastes, I had subdued mutant berserkers three times his mass with nothing more than body leverage, a scalpel, and a vial of synthetic paralytic. Kaelen was not a death sentence; he was an opportunity. Away from the prying eyes of the Conclave, surrounded by a dying warlord's empty halls, I would have complete freedom to operate.

And once I cleared the rot from his flesh and used my mother's knowledge to hand him back his magic, that terrifying warlord would become the heaviest weapon I could swing at the Thorne gates.

I moved to the stone hearth, grinding dried nightshade leaves and paralyzed wasp-root in a small mortar until it became an odorless gray powder. I folded the lethal compound into three tight wax-paper packets and slipped them into the hidden lining of my bodice. Next came my tools: three double-edged steel scalpels, a pair of curved arterial forceps, and fine surgical needles, all strapped tightly against my inner thigh beneath a thick leather garter.

No silver. Only cold, hardened steel.

A faint gray light began to bleed through the attic’s frosted windowpanes, pushing back the night.

From the hallway outside, soft, hesitant footsteps approached, followed by a muffled, trembling sniffle.

Two gentle taps sounded on the wood.

"My lady?" a frightened, fragile voice whispered through the keyhole. "It's Linnet. The... the mistress sent up the trunks. The carriage is at the postern gate."

I checked the steel at my thigh, smoothed down the dark folds of my skirts, and rested my hand on Yseult’s notebooks.

Dawn had broken over the Thorne estate.

I turned the bolt, pulled the door wide open, and looked down at my shivering little maid with a bright, tranquil smile.

"Dry your eyes, Linnet," I said pleasantly. "Pack my mother's chest into the carriage. We have a rabid wolf to collect."

That's everything available right now.
