Chapter 2
2.
Quinton's face turned sour when he heard the voice coming from my phone.
I stepped to the side and ignored him.
"Why are you here?" I asked into the phone.
A familiar, lazy voice replied, "You asked me to grab dinner, didn't you? So here I am."
Earlier that evening, in a moment of weakness, I had texted him asking if he wanted to get spicy wings.
I deleted the message within a minute, but clearly, he had already seen it.
When I didn't answer, he asked again, "Are you coming or what?"
I was about to say no, but then I saw Quinton watching me with a suspicious glare.
"Yeah, I'm coming."
The second the words left my mouth, I felt a pang of regret.
My drama with Quinton shouldn't involve anyone else.
The line went silent for a moment. Before I could take it back, I heard a deep, pleasant laugh.
"Then get your butt down here."
He hung up quickly, almost as if he knew exactly what I was trying to do.
I hesitated for a few seconds before heading to the bedroom to change.
As I tried to pass Quinton, he grabbed my wrist. His eyes were dark.
"Where do you think you're going?"
I pulled my hand away, my face like stone.
"Out to dinner with a friend."
I made sure to emphasize the word "friend."
"A friend? Didn't I tell you to stay away from Landon Thorne? He's bad news!" Quinton snapped.
I let out a sharp, cold laugh. "Quinton, it's just a dinner between friends. Can you stop being so childish?"
The words he used on me earlier hit him like a boomerang.
He stood there, stunned, as I walked out the door.
When I reached the driveway, Landon was leaning against his car, smoking.
His messy hair fell over his sharp brow bone. He had deep, dark eyes that looked like a storm.
Even though I had known him for over a decade, I still had to admit it.
The man was gorgeous.
Landon was my childhood sweetheart.
We used to be inseparable until I started dating Quinton. We slowly lost touch after that.
Two years ago, he outbid Quinton on a major business contract.
I had actually called Landon and screamed at him for it.
That was the first time in fifteen years he ever lost his temper with me.
"Sienna, do you even have a heart? If I ever try to help you again, I'm a dog."
We hadn't spoken a word since then.
"You're still dressing too light for the weather," Landon grumbled.
He took off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.
I felt a bit awkward and tried to give it back.
He pressed his hand over mine and leaned into my ear.
"You want to piss Quinton off, right? Then don't move."
His warm breath against my skin made my heart race. I remembered people telling me years ago that Landon liked me. My face started to burn.
"What the hell do you think you're doing!"
Quinton's roar came from behind us. Suddenly, a massive force yanked me backward.
I stumbled and fell hard onto the pavement.
"Sienna!" Landon was by my side in an instant.
Quinton tried to reach for me too, but Landon shoved him away.
"Landon, keep your filthy hands off her. Sienna is my wife."
Landon helped me up and asked if I was okay. When I nodded, he turned and landed a brutal punch right on Quinton's jaw.
"Quinton, I told you if you ever hurt her again, I'd kill you."
"What happens between me and my wife is none of your business!" Quinton yelled, clutching his face.
Landon was about to go for another round, but I grabbed his sleeve.
"I'm hungry. Aren't we going for wings?"
Landon looked at me, then opened the passenger door.
I noticed a silly photo I had stuck on his dashboard years ago was still there. I looked at him in shock.
"Just get in the car," he said, looking away awkwardly.
Quinton grabbed my hand one last time, his voice full of venom.
"Sienna, if you leave with him today, we are done. I will divorce you."
