Chapter 3 THE SECRET BRIDE
Seraphina woke up in a bed too soft to be real.
For a second, she thought she was still in the attic. That the cold floor, the thin blanket, the sound of her mother shouting downstairs - that was real. That this was a dream.
Then she smelled him.
Cold winter cologne. Expensive. Everywhere.
She sat up fast. The black silk robe - his robe - was still on her. Huge, swallowing her small body.
And on the couch by the window, Ethan Vance was awake.
He was already dressed. Black shirt, black pants, no tie. His hair combed, his grey eyes on her. He had been watching her sleep.
"What time is it?" she whispered.
"Seven. You slept ten hours," he said. His voice was still cold, but not cruel. "My maids said you never slept more than four hours in that attic. Because of the cold."
Seraphina froze. How did he know that?
Ethan stood. He picked up something from the table and threw it on the bed. A small velvet box.
"Open it."
With shaking fingers, she opened it. Inside was a diamond necklace. Not a small one. A teardrop diamond, big, with a thin platinum chain.
"For... for me?" she asked.
"Your dress tonight has no sleeves. I don't want you to cover it."
Tonight?
"What tonight?"
He looked at her scar peeking from the robe. "Your family is coming for dinner. At eight."
Seraphina's blood went cold. "No. Please. No."
"Yes."
He said it like a final verdict. No discussion.
"They called my assistant twenty times last night," Ethan said, his jaw tightening. "Your mother said, 'Send Sienna back home, the money didn't arrive.' She thinks you are Sienna. She doesn't know I kept you. She doesn't know I froze her accounts."
He walked to her, and gently - so gently it didn't match his cruel face - he took the necklace and put it around her neck. His fingers brushed her skin. Cold.
"Listen to me, Seraphina," he murmured, close to her ear. "Last night you were a substitute. Tonight, you are Mrs. Vance. Do you understand? You walk down my stairs. You sit next to me. You let me show them what they sold."
Seraphina was trembling. "They will beat me... they will say I'm defective..."
"Let them try," Ethan said, and his eyes went black. "I want them to try."
---
At 8 p.m., the doorbell rang.
Seraphina stood at the top of the grand staircase, and she didn't recognize herself.
She was wearing a dress from the trunk. Not white. Deep emerald green, soft silk, sleeveless. It showed her arms. It showed her scar. Fully. No hiding. No veil.
The dress was tight on her small waist, flowing down. Flat diamonds shoes. Hair down, not tied like Sienna always did. And the teardrop diamond necklace sat right above her scar, drawing every eye to it, making it look like part of the jewelry.
"You look..." Ethan came behind her, in a black suit. He stopped. His eyes darkened when he saw her. He stared at her scar in that dress, with his diamond on it. "Graceful."
It was the first compliment she ever got in her life about her scar.
"Boundless grace," he whispered, almost to himself.
Downstairs, voices. Her mother's shrill voice. Her father's nervous laugh.
"Sienna! Sienna, my darling, where are you? That monster- I mean, Ethan must be-"
Ethan put his hand on Seraphina's bare back, right next to the scar. Not pushing. Supporting.
"Walk," he said quietly. "With me."
They walked down the stairs together.
The moment Margaret Vale saw them, her smile froze.
She was expecting Sienna in expensive clothes, angry. She saw Seraphina. In emerald green. Wearing diamonds worth more than their house. With her scar showing. Holding Ethan Vance's arm.
And Ethan Vance was looking at Seraphina like she was something precious, not like a monster.
"What... what is this?" Margaret stuttered. "Where is Sienna? Why is THIS one-"
"This one," Ethan said coldly, his hand tightening protectively on Seraphina's back, "is my wife."
Silence in the huge dining hall.
Her father, Robert Vale, went white. "Mr. Vance, please, there is a misunderstanding, this girl is not Sienna, this is the other one, the-"
"The defective one?" Ethan finished for him. His voice dropped to ice. "Is that what you call her? In the attic?"
Margaret forced a laugh. "Mr. Vance, you don't understand, Seraphina is... sick. She has mental problems. She imagined things. We had to keep her upstairs for her own safety. Sienna is the real-"
"Don't."
One word from Ethan and the whole room went silent. The maids by the wall didn't move.
"Don't ever," he said, looking at Margaret with eyes that made grown men kneel in boardrooms, "call my wife sick again."
Seraphina's knees were shaking, but Ethan's hand on her back held her up.
He led her to the dining table. He pulled out the chair next to his - the hostess chair. The seat Sienna was supposed to sit in. He made Seraphina sit there.
Dinner was served. Steak, wine, food Seraphina had never seen.
Margaret couldn't take it. She stared at Seraphina's scar, exposed under the diamonds.
"Seraphina, cover yourself! Have some shame! That ugly scar, in front of Mr. Vance! You are embarrassing us!"
It was the same thing she always said. For twenty-two years.
Seraphina instinctively tried to pull her dress up to cover the scar. Old habit.
Ethan caught her hand mid-air. Held it. Stopped her.
Then he looked at Margaret.
"My wife's scar," he said slowly, calmly, cutting his steak, "is the reason I froze your company. Did you know that?"
Margaret choked.
"I called my lawyer this morning," Ethan continued, his voice conversational, but deadly. "He found the hospital record from 2008. Six-year-old girl. Burned with an iron by her mother. Margaret Vale. That is child abuse. That is twenty years in prison."
Margaret stood up so fast her chair fell. "You... you can't-"
"I can," Ethan said. He finally looked up. His grey eyes were cruel. Truly cruel, the monster everyone talked about. But not to Seraphina. To them. "I own the building where your company rents. I own the bank that holds your loan. I froze fifty million. Do you know how fast your company dies without fifty million?"
Robert Vale started sweating. "Mr. Vance, please, we can explain-"
"You don't explain," Ethan said. He put his arm around Seraphina's chair, possessive. "You listen. From today, Seraphina Vale does not exist. She is Seraphina Vance. My wife. If you call her, if you go near her, if you ever mention attic again, I will send that hospital record to the police and to every newspaper in New York. With photos."
Seraphina stared at him, tears in her eyes. No one had ever defended her. Ever.
Margaret looked at Seraphina with pure hatred. "You... you little snake. You seduced him! You stole your sister's husband! You-"
She raised her hand. The same hand that burned her. She moved to slap Seraphina across the face.
She didn't make it.
Ethan moved faster.
He caught Margaret's wrist in mid-air. One inch from Seraphina's cheek.
His grip was so hard Margaret screamed.
"Touch her," Ethan whispered, his face inches from Margaret's, his voice so low and dangerous the whole dining room went cold, "and I will break your hand."
He threw her wrist away like it was dirty.
"Get out," he said. "Get out of my house. And remember - my wife is not hidden anymore. She sits next to me. With her scar. With my diamonds. If you want your company to live, you will kneel next time you see her."
Margaret was dragged out by security, crying, shouting. Robert followed, shaking.
The doors slammed.
Silence.
Seraphina was shaking violently now, tears pouring.
Ethan knelt beside her chair, at her level. The cruel tycoon, kneeling again for the attic girl. He took her cold hands.
"Look at me," he said softly.
She looked.
"You did good," he whispered. "You didn't cover it."
"They... they hate me..."
"Let them hate," he said. "You have me now. Is that not enough?"
He reached out and touched her scar - not with disgust, but with his fingertips, gentle, reverent. Then he touched the diamond necklace above it.
"My boundless grace," he murmured.
Seraphina sobbed, but for the first time, not from fear.
Then the front door banged open again.
A maid ran in, panicked. "Sir! Sir! There is a woman at the gate! She says she is the real Mrs. Vance! She says her name is Sienna Vale!"
Seraphina's blood froze.
Sienna. Her perfect twin was back.
And she was standing at the gates of the mansion, demanding her husband.
Ethan's face went stone cold. He stood up slowly.
He looked at Seraphina in the green dress, tears on her face, his diamonds on her scar.
Then he looked at the door.
"Let her in," he said.
