Chapter 2
The next morning, Kael actually got up and made me breakfast.
But on the table was coffee and a bagel, both of which I had trouble digesting.
And on the stove, a pot of millet porridge was simmering, filling the kitchen with a fragrant aroma.
Kael was smiling at his phone, texting as he packed the porridge into a thermos.
When he saw that I hadn't touched my breakfast, his face darkened. "I got up early to make this for you. Why aren't you eating?"
"I make you breakfast, and you just give me a long face? What did I do to deserve this?"
Got up early? It takes five minutes to toast a bagel and make instant coffee. I didn't even bother to call him on his bullshit.
He had expected me to be grateful. My indifference just made him angrier.
He started lecturing me about how unappreciative I was.
I used to be the one who made him breakfast every day. But he would never eat with me. He would just have me pack it up so he could take it to the office.
I never would have dreamed of him making me breakfast. And now that I didn't care, he was suddenly playing the doting husband.
His nagging was giving me a headache. I took a bite of the bagel, but my stomach, already upset from last night, started to ache.
I put the bagel down. "I want some porridge," I said, my voice flat.
He just sneered and threw my breakfast in the trash. "What right do you have to ask for porridge? If you don't want it, then don't eat. I'm not going to spoil you."
With that, he went to his room to change and left for the day.
I ignored him and made an appointment with my doctor.
Then, I saw a new post from Lyra. The picture was taken in a hospital.
【Stomach's upset, so I'm on an IV. I'm craving some of your homemade millet porridge.】
I just had to laugh. So my breakfast was just an afterthought.
I had been a fool again.
My appointment was in the morning. It was hard to get a cab at this hour.
I decided to ask Kael for a ride. As he was leaving with the thermos, I called out to him. "I have to go to the hospital too. Can you give me a lift?"
He immediately got defensive. "Did you go through my phone? Why do you have to follow me everywhere?"
I knew he would misunderstand. Three months ago, I had "accidentally" run into him and Lyra shopping on a weekend. He had accused me of stalking him and had been paranoid about me asking where he was ever since.
"I have no interest in checking your phone," I explained wearily. "I just need a ride."
"Your assistant is in the hospital. As her good boss, aren't you going to visit her?"
My words left him speechless. He just shot me a glare. "I'm only seeing her for work! Unlike you!"
"And your colorblindness is such a hassle! You can't even drive!"
On the way to the hospital, his other assistant called. "Mr. Alden, the client is waiting for the file. Where are you?"
Then, a message from Lyra popped up on his screen.
He hung up, a conflicted look on his face. He glanced at the thermos, then at me, pretending to be asleep.
He pulled over, grabbed a file from the back seat, and shoved it into my hands. "I have something to do. Can you deliver this for me?"
"Just cross the street, go to the Intellis Building, and give it to my assistant, Lee."
"I'll come back and pick you up after you're done," he promised.
Then he just drove off, leaving me on the side of the road.
I delivered the file and waited for two hours. He never came back.
Finally, I had to take a cab to a nearby hospital, my stomach churning in pain.
He never even called to check on me.
When I got home, the first thing I saw was Lyra's new post. It was a picture of Kael in the hospital, feeding her millet porridge.
I just sneered, clutching my empty stomach, and started to eat the takeout I had ordered.
Suddenly, the front door slammed open. A stack of papers flew at my head, the sharp edges cutting my face.
"Do you think it's funny to mess with my clients, Elara?"
"I told you to deliver the green file! What the hell did you give them?"
"I waited for you for hours, and you just came home without saying a word!"
