Chapter 2

2

This time, her explosive rage came from a place of panic. I had poked her where it hurt the most.

"Melody, don't waste your breath on a man like him, " Jasper Cross said, soothing her while shooting me a provocative look.

Jasper was Melody's childhood sweetheart and the one who got away.

How deep was their bond? Even when Melody was giving birth, she demanded that Jasper be the one in the delivery room to support her.

Honestly, as a husband, I had been a total failure.

I pulled out a napkin to wipe the water off my clothes and spoke with unnatural calm.

"You wanted him here for the birth, so why should I stand in the way of your happiness? "

"I'll have the divorce papers sent over later. Consider it my push present for the baby. "

I handed Melody's phone back to her. Her eyes widened in genuine shock, her mouth hanging open.

She probably thought that because she had given me a son, I would be groveling at her feet, begging for her forgiveness like I always did.

As I walked past Jasper, I patted his shoulder. "I hope you two have a long and happy life together. "

He stared at me, dumbfounded, unable to tell if I was being serious.

He had intended to humiliate me, but he wasn't prepared for me to hand over the keys to his dream life.

"Ethan, what... what are you talking about? Melody and I are just friends. It's not what you think. "

"If it bothers you that much, I'll just stop coming around. Just don't do this to her. "

Melody couldn't stand seeing Jasper act so submissive. Her teeth ground together as her eyes blazed with a fury so intense I thought she might physically leap out of the bed.

I clenched my fists. A wave of exhaustion and powerlessness washed over me like a dark tide.

If she weren't physically tethered to the bed after giving birth, she probably would have slapped me twice by now.

"If it wasn't for me, you wouldn't even have a son to carry on your name! Are you really going to toss me aside now? " she screamed, her eyes bloodshot.

"If you don't apologize to Jasper right now, you can forget about ever seeing your son, you pathetic loser. "

Jasper lifted his chin, holding the infant tightly in his arms with a triumphant smirk. I let out a dry, cold laugh.

As a man, my wife was essentially parading her infidelity in my face. Did she really expect me to get on my knees and thank her for it?

Melody waited with an arrogant air for my apology. She was certain I couldn't live without her.

For years, I had tolerated her temper and swallowed my pride just to keep her happy.

But in the end, all my devotion earned me was the title of a loser.

I realized then that if you act like a doormat, people will never stop stepping on you.

I quickly slid my wedding ring off my finger and tossed it out the open window. It spun through the air in a perfect arc before disappearing.

"That son? " I said with a twisted smile. "You two keep him. He can be the one to mourn at your funerals. "
