Chapter 3 The Price of Loyalty.

"Check it now," Julian ordered, his voice dropping into that low, dangerous register that carried the crushing physical weight of a lead pipe in the heavy stillness of the boardroom. "Run the diagnostic on every single server node, and check it now." The persistent buzzing of my phone in the tailored pocket of my blazer felt less like a device and more like an electric current running straight down my spine. Every instinct I possessed screamed at me to check the screen, to see what fresh disaster my father was frantically messaging me about. But I kept my hands flat against the polished mahogany of the table, my fingers locked tight, refusing to move a single millimeter. If I pulled the phone out now, in front of the man who currently suspected me of being a corporate spy, it would sign my professional death warrant. "Mr. Vance, we already checked the core leak origin models twice this morning," one of the senior financial partners stammered, his face draining of all color until he looked like a sheet of fresh printer paper. "The security breach is internal, yes, but we haven't found the specific access terminal. It's like the ghost in the machine covered its tracks completely." Julian did not blink. He did not even look at the terrified partner. His steel-blue eyes remained entirely locked onto me, tracking the microscopic rise and fall of my chest with a terrifying, clinical precision. Slowly, deliberately, he pushed himself away from the head of the table and began to walk. His footsteps made no sound against the thick Persian rug, carrying him around the long glass structure with the silent, lethal grace of a predator closing the final distance on a cornered deer. He stopped mere inches away from my chair. The crisp, clean scent of cedarwood, expensive rain-washed wool, and raw dominance flooded my senses, making it impossibly difficult to draw a full breath. "We missed it because we were looking for an experienced analyst," Julian murmured, his voice laced with an intimate, mocking fascination that sent shivers racing down my arms. "A regular novice would not have the high-level security clearances required to access those folders... unless someone handed them the keys, or unless they already knew the architecture inside and out." He reached down, his long, warm fingers brushing against the edge of the printed strategy sheet I had edited earlier. He lifted the paper, his gaze scanning my handwritten notes before slowly rising back up to trap my eyes beneath his heavy, unwavering stare. "Your insight into Sterling's offshore liquidity models was brilliant, Elena," he continued, the words rolling off his tongue like slow poison. "Far too brilliant for a junior coordinator who is supposed to be fetching coffee and filing receipts. Unless, of course, you already knew those exact blueprints inside and out." The air in my lungs turned to ice. I had pushed too hard. Driven by a desperate, foolish instinct to protect my family's legacy from the inside, I had laid my cards right out on the table for the most dangerous man in the city to read. I swallowed hard, forcing my throat to unconstrict, and channeled every ounce of defensive indignation I could muster. I forced myself to project the exhausted, insulted anger of a hardworking employee who had been pushed past her absolute breaking point. "I am thorough, Mr. Vance," I said, my voice shaking with a carefully measured mix of frustration and defiance. "I read the encrypted merger brief you sent out to the department at two o'clock this morning. You are the one who constantly lectures us about knowing our opponent inside and out, so I did the research. If working late and mastering the metrics is a crime in this building, then you should fire me right now." The silence that followed stretched out, thick, agonizing, and heavy enough to crack bone. Julian did not look away. He did not smile. The polite, detached mask of corporate indifference he wore for the rest of the world was completely shattered, replaced by an intense, burning curiosity that felt far more dangerous than outright anger. Finally, he shifted his weight, turning his head slightly toward the terrified partners who were still lingering near the exit. "This meeting is adjourned," Julian commanded, never breaking eye contact whomever. "Everyone out. Except Elena." The partners did not need to be told twice. They scrambled frantically to grab their briefcases, offering me wide-eyed, horrified glances as they practically tripped over one another to escape through the glass doors. The heavy soundproof panels sealed shut with a soft, pneumatic click, leaving us completely and utterly isolated in the cavernous room. Julian leaned back against the edge of the mahogany desk, crossing his long legs, his posture appearing relaxed while his eyes remained intensely alert. "Research," he repeated, tasting the word on his tongue as if it were a rare, expensive vintage. "Fascinating. And if I were to pull the server logs and your individual workstation history for that two o'clock window, I suppose I would find you diligently pouring over closed-loop system files the entire time?" I nodded once, my chin held high, praying to every power in existence that our IT department's automated logs matched the fake trail I had mentally prepared. Suddenly, with a speed that defied his relaxed posture, Julian's hand shot out. His long fingers caught the fabric of my blazer near my shoulder, his knuckles lightly grazing the side of my neck as he guided me backward. I gasped softly, my heels catching the edge of the floor-to-ceiling window behind me. He followed me instantly, teachme in between his body and the cool, reinforced glass that overlooked the sparkling, rain-soaked expanse of the Chicago skyline. "You are remarkably brave, Elena," he whispered, his face inches from mine, his breath warm against my cheek. "Or else you are breathtakingly, catastrophically stupid. I haven't quite decided which one yet. But regardless of your motives... you were right about Sterling's financial vulnerability." I held my breath, my heart slamming against my ribs like a trapped animal, waiting for the devastating blow to fall. Waiting for him to call security, to expose me, to throw me out onto the street. Instead, his hand shifted, his thumb tracing the sharp line of my jawline with a familiarity that made my skin burn. "We are going to accelerate the logistics acquisition phase immediately," Julian ordered, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic register. "And since you understand their numbers better than anyone else in this building, you are no longer just my assistant. You are officially my lead financial strategist for this entire hostile takeover. We are going to use your calculations to choke Sterling Global out until they have nowhere left to run." My world tilted violently on its axis. Instead of firing me or handing me over to federal investigators, he was promoting me to the position of chief executioner asking me to wield the blade that would decapitate my own family's empire. At that exact second, my phone vibrated sharply against my thigh, cutting through the heavy silence of the office. I slipped my thumb down into my pocket, my fingers flying blindly across the glass screen to silence the notification, but not before the preview text flashed in my peripheral vision. It was an update from my father's head of security: We found the internal leak ID, Elena. It wasn't an outsider. It was a senior director on our own board. He sold our blueprints directly to Vance, and he just boarded a private jet out of the country. My blood turned to ice water in my veins. The catastrophic leak that had doomed my family's company had not come from Vance's side, nor had it been my fault. The betrayal came from deep within my own house. "I am going to own them, Elena," Julian whispered softly, his gaze dropping to my lips before snapping back up to pierce my soul, his hands resting firmly on the glass on either side of my head. "Every last brick, every last share, and every last executive. And when I finally take the throne at Sterling Global... I am going to make you their new CEO, just to watch the old guard squirm at your feet."

That's everything available right now.
