Chapter 1

The world turned into a nightmare of rotting flesh.

My boyfriend insisted on delaying our escape.

He wanted to wait for his annoying childhood friend so she could make the last rescue flight.

That was the final extraction after the outbreak, our only chance at survival.

Seeing her delay, I knocked him out and dragged him onto the chopper myself.

His precious friend died in the horde that followed.

I survived and lived a comfortable life with him in the safe zone.

But the night before I was supposed to lead the counter-offensive, he drugged my water.

He threw me to the zombies.

I was torn apart by hundreds of them, dying in agony.

He stood on the wall, sneering down at me.

"If it weren't for your selfishness, Chloe would have lived. You need to feel her pain and pay with your life!"

Now, I've been reborn.

I'm back on the day he insisted on waiting.

Since he wants to die with her so badly, I'll send them both to the monsters.

"This is our last chance. If we don't leave now, we're all dead!"

My team members were screaming at Caleb Miller, who was blocking the exit.

"Chloe Mercer isn't here yet. What's five more minutes?"

Caleb's face was cold, and he wouldn't budge.

"You're risking all our lives for one person! Don't be so selfish, Caleb!"

The team was frantic.

Someone tried to push him aside, but Caleb drew his gun.

The bullet grazed their heads, sending everyone into a panic.

"Are you insane?!"

Caleb snapped back, "You're the cowards! You're heartless and selfish!"

"Chloe isn't here, so no one is getting on that chopper! You're willing to abandon a comrade just to save your own skin? You don't deserve to live!"

The deputy leader looked at me desperately.

"Elena, the military is about to close the doors. If we keep waiting..."

I smiled slightly to calm everyone down.

I walked up to Caleb and rested a hand on his shoulder.

"Caleb is right. Our team never leaves anyone behind. Even if Chloe is late, we can't just abandon her."

Everyone gasped.

They couldn't believe I was siding with him.

"Captain... what are you saying? Just because he's your boyfriend, you're playing favorites?"

"Shut up!" Caleb fired another warning shot into the air.

"Elena said we wait for Chloe. Why are you all complaining so much?"

With my support, Caleb looked incredibly smug.

He leaned into me, his voice softening.

"Elena, I knew you were different. You actually care about loyalty."

I smirked and patted his head.

"Chloe is like a sister to me. How could I leave her?"

Caleb didn't know I didn't actually need that chopper.

As a lead virologist, I could call the military directly for a private extraction.

My team consisted of the industry's top talents, minus Caleb and Chloe.

In my past life, I chose the crowded transport just to keep Caleb safe.

This time, I'll make him pay for his stupidity.

I'll let his precious childhood friend drag him straight to hell.

Seeing no more resistance, Caleb looked even more triumphant.

Minutes ticked by, and the black tide of zombies approached from the distance.

Finally, Chloe Mercer arrived, panting and disheveled.

"Caleb! I knew you'd wait for me!"

She was exhausted but thrilled.

It was a miracle she made it across the city with her fitness level.

Caleb sighed in relief, a smile breaking across his face.

Just then, a deafening explosion echoed from afar.

The final defensive line had collapsed.
