"What, are you blaming Zane now? If it weren't for you, how would Zane have gotten hurt in the first place?"

"He's already frail, and now he hit his head..." Maya chimed in, her voice dripping with blame.

I looked at her, suddenly feeling like I was staring at a stranger.

Was this really the same girl who used to trail behind me, sweetly calling me her favorite person?

I remembered being wheeled into the operating room, bleeding heavily internally.

It was life-threatening.

Yet Maya had merely glanced at my chart and declared she needed to attend to Zane's minor cuts.

She abandoned a critically injured patient to put a band-aid on Zane's barely broken skin.

Fortunately, luck was on my side.

Another surgeon stepped in at the last second and saved my life.

"Cat got your tongue? Feeling guilty?" Sonya snapped, her tone turning even more venomous when I stayed quiet.

"If you hadn't insisted on taking that detour home, this accident wouldn't have happened!"

It was Zane who had thrown a tantrum and forced us to switch lanes, which caused the crash.

I didn't bother arguing.

They wouldn't believe me anyway.

I closed my eyes, tuning them out completely.

I would never harbor another shred of hope for either of them.
