Chapter 2

2

Brooks finally gave in.

When I drove to the bar, he was hanging out with a group of young, rich heirs.

They were the most notorious trust-fund brats in the city.

Before his memory loss, Brooks never associated with these people.

He used to think they were just useless losers living off their parents' legacies.

But now, he was one of them.

Soon, someone noticed me.

"Oh, Brooks, isn't that your wife? "

The guy spoke with a smirk. "What's the matter? Would a high-society lady like Everly North really come to a place like this? Did you come to fetch your husband because you're scared he won't go home? "

The whole booth erupted in laughter.

Only Jade, sitting next to Brooks, looked miserable.

It made sense. As the girl trying to steal my husband, she couldn't exactly laugh at that joke.

She glared at me, her eyes full of resentment and defensiveness.

Brooks sat in the middle of the booth. To my arrival and the group's mocking, he showed nothing but annoyance.

He downed his drink and sighed deeply.

"What a buzzkill. "

I remained expressionless, forcing myself to ignore his disdain. "Let's go. It's time to go home. "

Hearing this, Jade immediately put on a pathetic act. She grabbed his arm and whined, "But Brooks, I haven't had enough fun yet. "

Brooks looked at her with pure heartache, pulling her close to comfort her.

The two of them were being intimate right in front of everyone.

I stood there, looking like a villain trying to tear a pair of lovers apart.

Even the reckless guys around them couldn't watch anymore.

But they weren't helping me. They were looking to pour gas on the fire.

"Everly, we're having a great time. It's not right for you to just crash the party, is it? "

One of them picked up a bottle of hard liquor and looked at me playfully.

"Of course, we're reasonable people. Tell you what, finish this bottle, and you can take him. "

I frowned, about to refuse, but Brooks joined in the fun.

"My family has business with his. I came here today for a deal. If he doesn't agree, I really can't leave. "

He sat back casually, staring at me with interest, waiting to see how I'd handle the problem.

Even though our relationship was strained, the older Millers had always been good to me. I couldn't do anything to hurt their company.

It was obvious he was making things difficult on purpose.

But if I didn't drink, the guy could intentionally sabotage the deal with the Millers.

I picked up the bottle. Just the smell made my stomach churn.

I've had chronic stomach issues for years.

I've even been hospitalized for it several times.

Back then, Brooks would spend all his time learning how to cook special meals for my stomach.

A wealthy heir like him would wear an apron and clumsily learn how to make medicinal soups just for me.

"If you don't listen and end up in the hospital again, I'll start trashing my own body too! "

Back then, he would stare at me stubbornly.

It felt like my health was his entire world.

The man from the past overlapped with the Brooks in front of me, yet they couldn't be the same person.

Under the mocking gazes of the crowd and Brooks, I put the bottle to my lips.

"Fine. I'll drink. "
