Chapter 1
The heavy oak door swung open, and Mark Thompson walked into the foyer, his usual confident smile plastered on his face, a smile that always made the news outlets call him a visionary. But tonight, the smile didn't reach his eyes. Behind him, a young woman stumbled in, her face pale and streaked with tears. This was Chloe Green, his intern, a girl Ava had personally mentored in AI ethics.
Chloe' s designer dress was torn at the shoulder, and dark, sticky patches of what looked like blood stained the expensive fabric. She was trembling, holding onto Mark' s arm like a lifeline.
"Ava," Mark' s voice was low, tight with a strange mix of anger and concern. "Something terrible has happened."
Ava put down the book she was reading and stood up, her heart starting to beat a little faster. She looked from Mark' s tense face to Chloe' s theatrical display of distress.
"What is it? Chloe, are you hurt?"
Chloe let out a sob, a sound that seemed too loud for the quiet, minimalist house. She buried her face in Mark' s chest.
"It was awful, just awful," she cried, her voice muffled by his suit jacket. "We were celebrating the deal… Mark left to take a call… and this man… this homeless man, he came out of nowhere. He grabbed me."
Ava felt a chill go through her. She took a step forward, her instinct to help kicking in.
"Did you call the police? We need to get you to a hospital."
Chloe looked up, her eyes wide and filled with a sorrow that looked expertly practiced. She pointed a shaking finger at Ava.
"It was your fault," she whispered, her voice cracking. "He said… he said he knew me. He said he saw my picture with you, at that charity event you organized. He said if you cared so much about people like him, then I should too."
The accusation hung in the air, cold and sharp. Ava stared at her, completely confused. A charity event for the homeless? She had sponsored one months ago, a small, anonymous donation through Mark' s company foundation. Chloe had been a volunteer.
"What are you talking about, Chloe?"
Mark gently pushed Chloe behind him, stepping forward to shield her. He looked at Ava, and for the first time in their seven years of marriage, she saw pure, undisguised contempt in his eyes.
"This is what your bleeding-heart nonsense gets us, Ava," he said, his voice like ice. "I' m trying to build an empire, and you' re busy making us a target with your naive little projects. You and your obsession with 'ethical AI' and 'social responsibility' ."
He spat the words out like they were poison.
"Mark, that' s not fair. I was trying to help."
"Help?" He let out a short, ugly laugh. "You' ve humiliated me. Chloe is the face of our new initiative. She' s young, she' s brilliant, she' s what this company needs. And you, with your virtue signaling, you put her in danger. The press will have a field day with this."
He wasn't worried about Chloe. He was worried about the press. The realization hit Ava with the force of a physical blow.
"Mark, she needs a doctor, not a press conference."
"I' ll handle it," he snapped. He pulled out his phone and started making calls, his voice all business. He was talking to his PR team, his lawyers. He didn' t call the police. He didn' t call an ambulance.
An hour later, the story was already breaking online. 'Tech CEO Mark Thompson' s Intern Assaulted, Assailant Allegedly Inspired by CEO' s Wife' . The headlines were brutal. Her picture was everywhere, next to a tearful-looking Chloe.
Mark walked back into the living room where Ava was standing, numb. Chloe was gone, whisked away to a private suite at a luxury hotel, 'to recover from her trauma,' as Mark' s publicist had put it.
"You' ve become a liability, Ava," Mark said, not even looking at her. He was staring at his phone, watching the stock price for his company, Innovate AI, dip slightly.
"I did nothing," she said, her voice barely a whisper.
"You did everything," he countered, finally looking up. "Your name, Ava Thompson, is now a stain on my company. You are a problem that I have to solve."
His words were cold, calculated. He wasn' t her husband anymore. He was a CEO managing a crisis.
"So, what are you going to do?" she asked, a dreadful feeling creeping into her stomach.
"You' re going to leave. Not just this house, but my company. I can' t have you on the board of directors anymore. It' s a conflict of interest," he said with finality. "I' ve arranged a new position for you. At a competitor' s firm. Nexus Dynamics. Their CEO, Damon Blackwood, is a shark. He' ll work you to the bone. It' s the perfect place for you to lay low and think about the damage you' ve caused."
Nexus Dynamics. They were known for their ruthless, borderline unethical practices. It was everything Ava had fought against. Sending her there wasn't just a punishment, it was a profound insult to her entire life' s work.
"You can' t be serious, Mark. That place is a sweatshop. They violate every ethical guideline we ever established."
"That' s the point," he said with a cruel smirk. "Maybe a dose of reality will cure you of your idealism. Pack your things. A car will be here in the morning."
He turned and walked away, leaving her alone in the massive, empty house that suddenly felt like a tomb.
Later that night, unable to sleep, Ava walked into Mark' s home office. It was her office, really. She had designed the core architecture for Innovate AI' s revolutionary learning algorithm right here. It was her work, her genius, that had made Mark Thompson a star. He was the charismatic salesman, but she was the architect. She built the engine he drove.
His laptop was open on the desk. A video call was still active, the window minimized. It was a recording. She clicked on it, her hand trembling.
Mark' s face appeared on the screen, talking to his business partner, Liam. The call was from earlier that day, before he had come home.
"-the Chloe plan is working perfectly," Mark was saying, a smug look on his face. "A little bit of fake blood, a few tears, and the media eats it up. Ava' s obsession with ethics is the perfect weapon to use against her."
Liam looked uneasy. "Mark, are you sure about this? Ruining your own wife' s reputation… it seems extreme."
"Ava is a boat anchor, Liam," Mark said, his voice dripping with venom. "She' s holding me back. She' s too cautious, too 'moral' . She doesn' t understand that to build a real empire, you have to be willing to get your hands dirty. Chloe gets it. She' s ambitious. She' s hungry. She' ll do what needs to be done."
He leaned closer to the camera. "Seven years I' ve let her think she' s my partner. Seven years I' ve used her brilliant little mind to build my success. But her name is Miller, not Thompson. She was never truly one of us. It' s time to cut her loose. Once she' s gone, and Chloe is by my side, nothing can stop me."
The recording ended.
Ava stood there, the silence of the room roaring in her ears. Betrayal wasn't a strong enough word. This was an evisceration. Her entire life with him, her love, her work, her sacrifice-it was all a lie. A tool he had used and was now ready to discard.
She looked at the complex lines of code on a nearby monitor, the ethical framework she had designed. The very soul of the company. It was beautiful, intricate, and powerful. It was what made his AI more than just a machine. He called her the 'Flower Goddess' in their early days, a joke about how she could make technology 'blossom' with humanity. He thought it was a cute nickname. He never understood it was the source of his power.
She moved to the main server console. Her credentials were still active. With a few keystrokes, she accessed the core system, the part of the code only she understood. It was a complex, self-sustaining system she had built, an ethical governor that kept the AI from becoming too aggressive, too manipulative. It was the secret ingredient to its stability and success.
She didn't delete it. That would be too simple, too quick. Instead, she initiated a single, hidden command. A gradual decay protocol. Without her regular maintenance, without her guiding hand, the ethical framework would slowly, imperceptibly, begin to unravel. The AI would become unstable, erratic, and ultimately, useless. Its 'luck', its 'genius', would simply run out.
She closed the laptop. She didn't pack a single bag. She walked out of the house with nothing but the clothes on her back and the cold, hard clarity of a woman who had lost everything and, in doing so, had found the terrifying power of her own freedom. Mark Thompson had built his empire on her soul. Now, he would watch it crumble into dust without her.
